An inspiring celebration of courage, dignity, hope, and the right of every girl to dream beyond the circumstances into which she was born.
On October 10, 2026, the Zonta Club of Makati & Environs Foundation, Inc. (ZCME), together with the Golden Z Club of Taguig City University (TCU), celebrated Zonta International Day of the Girl Child through a meaningful and empowering gathering that placed the voices, dreams, and rights of young girls at the heart of the occasion.
Guided by the message "Batang Babae: Malayang Mangarap, Malayang Pumili,โ the activity championed a powerful truth: every girl deserves the freedom to dream, the confidence to choose her future, and the opportunity to live a life defined not by fear or hardship, but by dignity, education, and hope.
Yet, for the 30 girls from the Arnold Janssen Kalinga Center who participated in this special celebration, the message carried a deeper meaning. Among the beneficiaries were girls from families affected by extrajudicial killings (EJK) and families experiencing poverty and other forms of social disadvantage. For these children, the challenges of growing up may include grief, uncertainty, limited resources, and the painful consequences of circumstances beyond their control.
Their stories remind us that behind every statistic is a child with a name, a heart that hopes, and a future that deserves protection. They are not defined by the hardships their families have endured. They are girls with potential, intelligence, creativity, and dreams that deserve to be nurtured.

This is where Zonta's commitment becomes more than a statement of advocacy. A particularly inspiring highlight of the celebration was the leadership of the ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐๐๐ง ๐ ๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ฎ๐ข๐ ๐๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐๐ง๐ข๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ, ๐ฐ๐ก๐ข๐๐ก ๐ญ๐จ๐จ๐ค ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฅ๐๐๐ ๐ข๐ง ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ซ๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ ๐ซ๐๐ฆ.
Through their thoughtful and engaging activities, these young women demonstrated that leadership is not measured by age or position, but by the willingness to serve, the courage to speak up, and the compassion to make a difference.
The program opened with a prayer and welcome messages, followed by a series of activities designed to strengthen the girls' self-esteem, encourage positive self-image, and help them recognize their own worth. Through the โI Am Affirmationsโ icebreaker, short talks on self-esteem and positive self-image, and the group activity on identifying and changing negative self-talk, the girls were encouraged to challenge the hurtful messages they may have heard or come to believe about themselves.
The powerful โTalk in the Mirrorโ activity invited them to look at themselves with greater kindness and recognize the strength, beauty, and possibilities within. During journal writing and the โLetter to My Future Selfโ and vision-board activity, the girls were encouraged to imagine the lives they hope to lead, the dreams they wish to pursue, and the women they aspire to become.
These were not merely games or classroom exercises. They were opportunities for healing, reflection, self-discovery, and renewed confidence.
For a girl who has experienced loss, a family crisis, or the limitations brought about by poverty, learning to believe in herself can be a courageous first step toward reclaiming her future. When a girl begins to see herself as worthy of respect, capable of achievement, and entitled to make choices, she begins to understand that her dreams matter.
The Golden Z students did more than deliver a program. They created a space where girls could be heard, encouraged, and inspired. They showed the beneficiaries what it means to be young women who use their education, talents, and leadership to uplift others.
In inspiring these girls to believe in themselves, the Golden Z leaders also demonstrated the very future Zonta seeks to build: a generation of empowered women who will, in turn, empower others.

In keeping with Zonta International's commitment to ending child marriage, protecting girls' rights, and investing in their futures, the activity brought together emotional empowerment and practical support.
School bags and supplies, hygiene kits, food, prizes, and other essential donations helped address some of the immediate needs of the beneficiaries. The distribution of clothes, shoes, and slippers further extended the spirit of care beyond the formal program. Souvenir photographs preserved memories of a day dedicated to reminding every girl that she is seen, valued, and worthy of investment.
These gifts may appear simple, but their meaning reaches far beyond their material value. A school bag can represent readiness to learn. School supplies can open doors to education. Hygiene essentials can support dignity and well-being. A new pair of shoes can offer comfort and confidence. A shared meal can create a sense of belonging. An encouraging word can become a memory a child carries long after the event has ended.
And when a girl is invited to write a letter to her future self, she is given something equally important: permission to imagine a future larger than her present difficulties.
The celebration affirmed that protecting girls requires more than telling them to be strong. It requires communities to help make their lives safer, their education more accessible, their voices more respected, and their opportunities more attainable.
It also underscored the importance of ending child marriage. Every girl must be allowed to grow, learn, and mature without being forced into adult responsibilities before she is ready. Her childhood is not a burden to be hurried through; it is a precious stage of life that society has a duty to protect.

We cannot erase the pain experienced by families affected by violence. We cannot instantly remove the barriers created by poverty. We cannot promise that every challenge will disappear when the program ends.
But we can offer a safe and encouraging space. We can provide the tools to continue learning. We can listen without judgment. We can teach a girl to recognize her worth. We can help her understand that her voice deserves to be heard and that her choices deserve respect.
And perhaps, years from now, one of the girls who attended this celebration will remember the day someone encouraged her to look in the mirror and see not her hardships, but her possibilities. Perhaps she will remember the young women from TCU Golden Z Club who stood before her, not to tell her what she could never become, but to help her imagine what she could be.
That memory may become a source of courage when life becomes difficult. That encouragement may help her remain in school, speak up for herself, recognize unsafe situations, or pursue a dream she once thought impossible.
We may never know the full impact of a single morning of service. But we can trust that when kindness is joined with education, empowerment, and sustained commitment, its influence can extend far beyond the moment.
The true measure of this activity will not be found only in the number of bags distributed or the number of girls who attended. It will be found in the confidence awakened, the dignity affirmed, the dreams encouraged, and the possibilities that the girls now dare to imagine.
