On August 4, 2026, a preparatory meeting was convened in anticipation of the upcoming International Coastal Clean Up scheduled for September 12, 2026. The meeting brought together representatives from key partner companies and organizations committed to environmental stewardship, including Philippine Prosperity Chemicals, Inc., Mabuhay Vinyl Corporation, Legaspi Import and Export Corporation, Coastal Bay Chemicals, Inc., Pollution Control Association of the Philippines, Inc., and Samahan sa Pilipinas ng mga Industriyang Kimika.

Presiding over the meeting was Engr. Gretchen Fontejon Enarle, Director of the Environmental, Social and Governance Committee, who opened the session with an overview of the event’s objectives and the importance of collaborative action in protecting the country’s coastal ecosystems. The attendees discussed detailed plans for logistics, volunteer coordination, waste collection and disposal procedures, safety protocols, and publicity strategies to maximize community engagement.

The meeting emphasized the vital role of industry partnerships in advancing environmental sustainability goals and reaffirmed the commitment of all participants to ensure a successful and impactful International Coastal Clean Up. With about a month remaining until the event, the collaborative efforts laid down during this preparatory meeting are poised to enhance the effectiveness and reach of this environmental initiative, fostering cleaner and healthier coastal communities across the Philippines.

On August 3rd, the American Chemistry Council (ACC) hosted a collaborative webinar with the Pakistan Chemical Manufacturers Association (PCMA) as part of an ongoing series of Responsible Care webinars led by the Responsible Care Leadership Group (RCLG). This session focused on the critical element of verification within Responsible Care and showcased a variety of verification models employed by RCLG federations around the world.

Verification has been a cornerstone of Responsible Care, providing assurance that companies uphold rigorous standards in environmental stewardship, health, safety, and security. However, given the diversity of regulatory environments, industry maturity, and cultural contexts, federations have tailored their verification processes to meet specific regional and operational needs. Through this webinar, PCMA members gained valuable insights into these varied approaches, emphasizing that there is no single “one-size-fits-all” model for Responsible Care verification.

The webinar began with welcoming remarks and introductions by Dan Roczniak of ACC, followed by an overview of the ICCA Fundamental Feature on Verification. Four RCLG representatives then presented their unique verification model. Engr. Gretchen Fontejon Enarle of the Samahan sa Pilipinas ng mga Industriyang Kimika (S**K- Philippines) described the Philippines’ collaborative, context-specific approach, Mr. Amon Nyamhingura of CAIA highlighted South Africa’s focus on compliance and continuous improvement; meanwhile, Mr. Luiz Shizuo Harayashiki of ABIQUIM discussed Brazil’s partnership-driven model with regulators.

Following these case studies, the floor was opened for questions, fostering an interactive dialogue with PCMA members and other attendees. This exchange offered a valuable opportunity to compare and contrast different verification models, enabling participants to identify best practices that can be adapted to their own environments.

The recent session on the Philippine Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Portal Preview and Early Access Pilot served as a crucial update for stakeholders on the portal’s development and marked the pilot launch of its User Account Creation Module. This event also coincided with the fourth anniversary of Republic Act 11898 (RA 11898), providing a timely opportunity to reflect on the progress of EPR implementation in the country and discuss the next steps in enhancing its digital infrastructure.

Atty. Michael Drake P. Matias, Director of the Environmental Management Bureau, delivered the welcome message, underscoring that establishing an effective EPR management system is a long-term endeavor necessitating continuous collaboration among all stakeholders. His remarks set the tone for the session, emphasizing the importance of partnership in achieving sustainable waste management goals.

The session featured a key presentation by Mr. Rolando Enoc, Senior Environmental Management Specialist, who detailed the current status and future plans for the EPR Portal. Additionally, representatives from GIZ and Simplevia Technologies showcased their contributions to the portal’s development, highlighting technological innovations that facilitate user interaction and compliance monitoring.

The lanes came alive with energy and excitement as S**K successfully held its Annual Bowling Tournament on July 23, 2026, at E-Lanes Bowling Center, San Juan City. The event brought together 21 teams representing 16 S**K member companies, creating an atmosphere of friendly competition, teamwork, and fellowship.

The program officially commenced with opening remarks from Dir. Jahzon David Lih, Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, who welcomed the participants and encouraged everyone to enjoy the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie. After a hearty lunch, the teams headed to the bowling lanes, ready to compete for this year’s championship.

The tournament was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Mabuhay Vinyl Corporation, All Waste Services, Inc., Henkel Philippines, Inc., CB Andrew Philippines, Inc., and TNC Chemicals Philippines, Inc., whose support contributed to another memorable S**K gathering.

Following an exciting afternoon of strikes and spares, D&L Industries, Inc. claimed the 2026 Tournament Championship, with Mabuhay Vinyl Corporation taking home the 1st Runner-Up title and Henkel Philippines, Inc. finishing as the 2nd Runner-Up.

Individual excellence was likewise recognized during the awarding ceremony. Ms. Iris Tizon of D&L Industries, Inc. received the Highest Female Score award, while Mr. Romel Santos of Mabuhay Vinyl Corporation earned the Highest Male Score award for his outstanding performance.

On July 15, 2026, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) conducted a crucial Public Consultation at the EMB Central Office in Quezon City. This event focused on the proposed amendments to DENR Administrative Order 2016-28, which seeks to update fees and charges for various EMB services.

The consultation provided a platform for stakeholders and industry representatives to review and discuss the proposed revisions. Participants actively contributed valuable comments and recommendations, ensuring that the new fee structure would be practical, responsive, and aligned with current administrative and operational requirements.

Among the engaged attendees, the Samahan sa Pilipinas ng mga Industriyang Kimika (S**K) actively participated, offering insightful feedback that reflected industry perspectives. Their involvement underscored the importance of collaborative dialogue between the EMB and key environmental stakeholders in shaping policies that balance environmental management and industry needs.

To set the tone for the verification, Ms. Cielo Garcia, Regulatory Affairs Specialist, presented the company’s profile. She highlighted the company’s transition from Connell Bros. Co. Pilipinas, Inc. to Caldic Philippines, Inc., providing an overview of its business operations and organizational developments.

Engr. Albert Samuela, S**K Verifier, gave a brief presentation on the Responsible Care® initiative and the objectives and process of the Responsible Care Verification. The verification process consisted of a comprehensive review of relevant documents and records, inspection of facilities and operations, and discussions with the company’s authorized representatives to validate compliance with the Responsible Care Management System requirements.

Following the established verification procedures, the S**K Verifiers evaluated the documents and records presented by Ms. Ria Pugay, QHSE Manager and ESG Lead – Philippines. During the assessment, Ms. Antonette Fallarme, S**K Verifier, commended the company for its well-maintained compliance monitoring matrix, which effectively tracks regulatory requirements and submissions to the various government agencies.

As part of the verification, the team also inspected the company’s laboratory, where prototype formulations are developed and tested to meet clients’ specific requirements. The observations and findings gathered during the verification will be evaluated as part of the overall assessment and will serve as the basis for the completion of the Responsible Care Verification process and the corresponding recommendations.

The Department of Science and Technology – Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) commemorated its 125th Foundation Anniversary with a program themed “125 Taon ng Paglilingkod sa Industriya: Pagsanib ng Siyensya, Teknolohiya, Inobasyon, at Kultura.” The event included a ribbon-cutting for the ITDI@125 Exhibit, inspirational speeches by DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr. and other key officials, and the unveiling of the 125th Founding Anniversary Marker alongside the 125 Technologies Coffee Table Book.

Recognitions were a major highlight, honoring 15 Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) members and 25 industry partners. Among the honored IAC members were Engr. BENTILANON, President of the Samahan sa Pilipinas ng mga Industriyang Kimika (S**K), who attended the event. The institute also received the ARTA RCS 2.0 Silver Award for Excellence in Ease of Doing Business, and outstanding employees and units were acknowledged through the PRAISE program.

The anniversary featured a Gender and Development segment, with a keynote lecture on the “International Year of the Woman Farmer” and related reports that emphasized ITDI’s commitment to gender advocacy. Cultural presentations followed, including a grand production on Philippine myths and folklore, with teams representing legendary figures such as Aswang, Lam-ang, Maria Makiling, and Bathala.

The celebration concluded with contests, games, and multiple raffle draws, culminating in the awarding of festival winners and the ITDI 125 Grand Champion. Chairperson Floridel V. Loberiano delivered the closing remarks, closing a day rich in reflection, recognition, and cultural pride that highlighted ITDI’s long-standing dedication to science, technology, innovation, and industry service.

From June 30 to July 1, 2026, the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Cooperative Threat Reduction (CTR), in partnership with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), held a pivotal two-day workshop in Manila, Philippines, focused on strengthening chemical supply chain security in Southeast Asia.

The workshop aimed to deepen participants’ understanding and practical application of two critical maturity models: the Chemical Security Assessment Model (CSAM) and the Chemical Life Cycle and Supply Chain Security (CLiCS) model. These models helped organizations assess their chemical security maturity, pinpoint vulnerabilities, and design improvements aligned with their national and institutional realities.

Attended by representatives from the Philippines and Indonesia, the event combined presentations, country reflections, and hands-on exercises. Participants broke into teams to examine specific domains within the models ranging from asset and risk management to supply chain tracking and transportation security engaging in detailed discussions on challenges and potential solutions.

The workshop featured integrated tabletop exercises simulating real-world scenarios, enabling participants to propose immediate and medium-term measures and explore cross-border coordination strategies for prevention, detection, and response to chemical security threats.

Led by Dr. Radha K Motkuri, Senior Principal Chemical Engineer at PNNL, and an expert with over 26 years of experience in chemical security, the event provided hands-on training designed to empower participants as trainers. This equipped the participants to assist manufacturers and organizations handling hazardous chemicals in conducting facility security self-assessments.By the end of the workshop, attendees had gained enhanced technical skills and access to ongoing resources to support their chemical security assessment efforts. This collaborative initiative marked an important step toward securing chemical supply chains and fostering regional cooperation against malicious actors.

The Professional Regulatory Board of Chemical Engineering, under the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), honored Engr. Gretchen F. Enarle for her outstanding contributions to the chemical engineering profession. Pursuant to the Chemical Engineering Law of 2004 (Republic Act No. 9297), she was selected as a recipient of the Board’s prestigious Recognition Award.

Engr. Enarle currently serves as Director of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) of the Samahan sa Pilipinas ng mga Industriyang Kimika (S**K) and as Sustainability Leader at Atlantic Coatings, Inc. She also previously held leadership roles, including Past President of S**K and the Pollution Control Association of the Philippines (PCAPI).

In recognition of her dedicated service, she was also presented a Service Award from the PRC. The awards were conferred during the Oathtaking Ceremony for the May 2026 New Chemical Engineers, held on 26 June 2026 at the Manila Hotel Tent City, One Rizal Park, Manila. Engr. Enarle attended the event and delivered a brief response during the program.
