How to better listen to God.......Be STILL..first of all....
Listening to God is rarely dramatic. It isn't about loud voices or sudden visions. Often, it's quiet, subtle, and deeply personal. It requires slowing down, paying attention, and learning to notice His guidance in the ordinary, everyday moments.
1. Create space for stillness.
Life is noisy. Work, social media, responsibilities, and endless distractions make it hard to hear the gentle whispers of God.
To listen, we must pause, breathe, and intentionally quiet our minds. This stillness isn't empty. It's a fertile ground for God's voice to reach us.
"Be still, and know that I am God." - Psalm 46:10
2. Engage deeply with Scripture.
God primarily speaks to us through His Word. Reading the Bible slowly, reflecting on it, and asking Him for understanding allows His truth to shape our hearts. Words that once seemed familiar suddenly carry weight, convict, encourage, or guide in ways we never noticed before.
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." - Psalm 119:105
3. Pray to hear, not just to speak.
Prayer is not a monologue. Listening requires us to be silent enough to notice God's guidance. Sometimes He speaks through a sense of peace, a strong conviction, or gentle nudges in our hearts. The more we practice this posture, the more we recognize His voice amid the clutter of our thoughts.
"Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known." - Jeremiah 33:3
4. Seek confirmation through life and counsel.
God often confirms His guidance through circumstances, godly advice, and alignment with Scripture. When what we sense aligns with His truth, brings peace, and encourages love, it's often a sign of His direction. Trusting this process takes patience and humility.
"If anyone is willing to do his will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or is self-made." - John 7:17
5. Practice discernment and patience.
Not every thought, feeling, or impression comes from God. Learning to distinguish His voice requires practice, prayer, and time. The more we engage with Him, the more attuned our hearts become to His guidance. Spiritual listening is cultivated over a lifetime, not in a single moment.
"But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil." - Hebrews 5:14
Today, choose one intentional way to listen to God: a moment of silence, a Bible verse, or a prayer where you wait for Him.
Ask Him to speak and trust that even small steps of listening are shaping a heart attuned to Him. Over time, His voice will become unmistakable.
