Alam niyo ba? Si Eric Oteyza de Guia, na mas kilala bilang Kidlat Tahimik, ay isang kilalang pioneer ng Philippine independent cinema. Ang kaniyang pangalan na โ€œKidlat Tahimikโ€ ay tumutukoy sa โ€œquiet lightning,โ€ na iniuugnay sa kaniyang tahimik ngunit makapangyarihang paraan ng paggawa ng pelikula at sining.

Alam niyo rin ba? Ilan sa kaniyang mga kilalang obra ay ang Mababangong Bangungot (Perfumed Nightmare), Turumba, Who Invented the Yo-Yo? Who Invented the Moon Buggy?, BalikBayan #1: Memories of Overdevelopment Redux III, at Indio-Genius: 500 Taon ng Labanang Kultural. Sa kaniyang mga gawa, madalas niyang binibigyang-halaga ang kulturang Pilipino, katutubong kaalaman, at mga karanasang lokal habang tinatalakay ang epekto ng kolonyalismo at globalisasyon.

Dito makikita na ang pelikula ay hindi lamang tungkol sa kuwento sa harap ng camera. Maaari rin itong maging paraan upang maipakita ang ating kultura, kasaysayan, at pagkakakilanlan. Ito ay panahon ng takot at pang-aabuso, hindi ng kaayusan at progreso.

Bilang mga artista, tungkulin naming alalahanin ang katotohanang ito. Sapagkat ang sining ay hindi lamang paglikha โ€” ito rin ay pag-alala at paglaban sa paglimot.

Ngayong ika-54 na taon, ginugunita ng UMak Film Society ang mga biktima at ang lahat ng tumindig laban sa diktadurya.
