The Malaysian fire snail, or Platymma tweediei as it’s known in scientific circles, is a remarkable and distinctive land snail that can only be found in the forests of Peninsular Malaysia, specifically those located at altitudes above 1,000 meters.

This snail is easily recognizable due to its black shell and vibrant red or orange “foot” that gives the impression of a flame. It’s one of the largest and most uncommon land snails in the area, with a body length that can reach up to 8 cm and a shell diameter between 7 and 8 cm. Interestingly, it’s the only species in its genus, Platymma, a name that translates to “broad eye” in Greek.

Unfortunately, this fascinating creature is facing serious threats from habitat destruction and illegal poaching for the pet trade.

Although it’s not officially classified as endangered, the snail’s scarcity and decreasing population numbers are cause for concern about its long-term survival.
