For many Filipinos, Martial Law meant living with fear, silence, and uncertainty. Thousands were arrested, tortured, or forcibly disappeared, while families were left searching for their loved ones. Freedom of speech and other basic rights were also heavily restricted. Remembering this part of our history means honoring those who suffered and were lost, while also recognizing the courage of ordinary Filipinos who came together during the 1986 People Power Revolution.

Now, the Freedom Wall is YOURS.

𝐒𝐄𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐁𝐄𝐑 𝟐𝟏 | 𝐑𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐌𝐁𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐋𝐀𝐖

On September 21, 1972, President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. signed Proclamation No. 1081, placing the Philippines under Martial Law. It was presented as a response to threats of rebellion and the growing communist movement. Soon after, thr government gained sweeping powers, while opposition figures, journalists, and other critics were arrested and detained. The period also brough strict controls on daily life. Media outlets were shut down or placed under government control, curfews were enforced, and public gatherings and other forms of dissent were restricted. Human rights groups documented widespread arbitrary arrests, torture, enforced disappearances, and killings during the Marcos era.

Martial law was formally lifted on January 17, 1981, but Marcos remained in power. His authoritarian rule continued until February 1986, when the People Power Edsa Revolution brought hundreds of thousands of Filipinos to EDSA and led to Marcos and his family leaving the country.

As history students, we remember September 21 not simply as a date, but as a reminder of what happens when power is placed above rights and when voices are silenced.

History asks us to remember.
Let’s not live in fear of the past,
but attain to understand it,
question it,
and learn from it.

70 years ago, amidst the shadow of social unrest and communist insurgency in post-World War II Pampanga, the Kapampangan faithful found its anchor of hope. Under the pastoral leadership of Servant of God, Most Rev. Cesar Ma. Guerrero, the first Bishop of the Diocese of San Fernando (Pampanga), the Cruzada de Penitencia y Caridad brought the image of the Virgen de los Remedios to every town and barrio, bridging socio-economic divides through charity (lamac) and prayer.

Recognizing this movement of peace, Pope Pius XII granted the Papal Bull for her Canonical Coronation, which culminated in a historic gathering of over 75,000 faithful on September 8, 1956 in the Capitol Grounds of Pampanga.

Seventy years have passed, yet the faithful Kapampangan remains steadfast in seeking the intercession of their INDU, reminding every Kapampangan that she continues to be the enduring symbol of peace, unity, and hope. Today, we celebrate Indu ning Capaldanan (Mother of Remedy) not just as an image of devotion, but as a living testament to synodality, healing, and community building across the province.

Let us ask the prayers of Virgen de los Remedios to her Son, the Sto. Cristo del Perdon y Caridad, our Compassionate God, as we seek for healing and remedy.

AB HISTORY GRADUATE TAKES HISTORY TO THE NATIONAL STAGE

We warmly congratulate the former PANTALAKAYAN president, Mr. Justin Galang, for his acceptance of the abstract to be presented for the 47th conference on local and national history.

As the former PANTALAKAYAN president, Mr. Justin Galang became a role model for future historians to tackle on any challenges, and open opportunities for us to learn more on what it takes to become an historian.

As he walks on the new chapter of his life as a historian, Mr. Justin Galang's story reminds us that we are faced with challenges and are meant to be, and every journey counts on becoming a part of history.

AB HISTORY GRADUATE TAKES HISTORY TO THE NATIONAL STAGE

Mabalacat City College proudly congratulates Justine Galang, an AB History graduate, Class of 2026, for having his research accepted for presentation at the 47th National Conference on Local and National History of the Philippine National Historical Society (PNHS), to be held on October 22–23, 2026, in Catarman, Northern Samar.

RESEARCH TITLE: “Cultivating Resilience: A Historical Examination of Minalin’s Shift to Aquaculture Following the Mt. Pinatubo Eruption (1993–2003)”

Justine’s research will be presented alongside the works of historians, researchers, educators, and students from across the country, contributing to the wider academic conversation on Philippine history.As the PNHS celebrates its 85th year, this achievement is a proud moment for the MCC community and reflects the AB History Program’s commitment to developing historical thinking, research skills, critical inquiry, and the confidence to contribute to the continuing study of Philippine history.

Congratulations, Justine! May your achievement inspire the next generation of MCC historians to pursue meaningful questions, uncover our histories, and bring them to wider audiences.

“Where history is remembered, questioned, and given life.”

And just like that, 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗸𝗮𝘁: 𝗨𝗸𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗞𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗡𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝗮𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻 became a history 🎨 The colors have been cleared, the artworks have been taken down, and the event has finally come to a close.

What began as an exhihit became more than a display of art. For a few days, MCC Main Campus Student Center became a space where history could be seen beyond textbooks — through lines, colors, creativity, and the stories that each work carried. Depsite the the unexpected change in schedule brought by the weather and suspension of classes, the exhibit continued. And perhaps that is fitting for history itself: 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲.

PANTALAKAYAN extends our sincerest gratitude to MCC, our faculty and administrators, our participating artists and students, our partners and supporters, and everyone who visited and helped make the exhibit possible. Your time, creativity, and presence gave meaning to every artwork and every moment shared throughout the exhibit. Thank you for making Sining Balakat possible.

Ngayong araw ng mga bayani, inaalala natin ang mga Pilipinong nag-alay ng kanilang buhay, tapang, at paninindigan para sa bayan. Ngunit ang kabayanihan ay hindi natatapos sa mga pangalang nakaukit sa monumento o mga mukha sa pahina ng ating mga aklat.

Ang kasaysayan ay hindi lamang kuwento ng mga dakilang pangalan.

Mula sa mga rebolusyonaryo hanggang sa mga Pilipinong lumaban sa iba’t ibang anyo ng kolonyalismo at pananakop, ipinapakita ng ating kasaysayan na maraming anyo ang paglilingkod sa bayan. May mga nakipaglaban sa digmaan, may nagsulat at nagsalita, may nag-organisa ng mga pamayanan, at may tahimik na tumulong sa kapwa.

Mahalaga ring tandaan na 𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶 𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘂𝗺𝘂𝗼 𝘀𝗮 𝗸𝗮𝘀𝗮𝘆𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻. Sa likod ng mga kilalang bayani ay ang napakaraming ordinaryong Pilipinong nakibahagi sa mga pakikibaka noong panahon nila — mga kuwento na patuloy nating kailangang kilalanin at alalahahin.

Ang paggunita sa mga bayani, kung gayon, ay hindi lamang tungkol sa pagtingala sa nakaraan. Ito rin ay pagkakataong balikan ang kanilang mga ipinaglaban at tanungin kung paano natin pinahahalagahan ang mga bagay na ipinasa nila sa atin. Dahil ang isang bayan na marunong umalala ay mas may kakayahang matuto mula sa sarili nitong kasaysayan.

Kaya sa paggunita natin sa ating mga bayani, mahalaga ring itanong: Ano ba talaga ang ginagawa ng isang tao upang maging bayani?

Hindi natin kailangang maging bayani sa paraang isinulat sa mga aklat. Minsan, nagsisimula ito sa simpleng pagkilos para sa tama, pag-alala sa mga nauna sa atin, at pagkakaroon ng tapang na makialam sa mga usaping nakaaapekto sa ating kapwa.

Ngayong National Heroes Day, alalahanin natin sila — hindi bilang mga pangalang kailangang isaulo, kundi bilang mga taong may mga paninindigang patuloy na nagbibigay-kahulugan sa ating pagiging Pilipino.

At marahil, ang pinakamagandang paraan para parangalan sila ay hindi lamang ang sabihin na “𝗠𝗮𝗯𝘂𝗵𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗴𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗶!”

Kundi ang itanong sa sarili:

“𝗔𝗻𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗮𝘆𝗮 𝗸𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗮𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝘀𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗴𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗻?” 🇵🇭
