SIUALA EDITORIAL | Pillars of Integrity, Echoes of Change

For so long, the presence of corruption has been a contemporary issue in the Philippines that is constantly longing for an end. It is not merely a conflict in our society and economy; it is the very act that weakens the country's growth, and deprives the citizens of the opportunities for a better life. From small grafts in local businesses to large issues involving billions of pesos, corruption has bled into the same system that was meant to serve the people. Unless corruption comes to an end, it will continue being the nation's biggest anchor in attaining social and economic growth.

Some claim that while corruption is undeniably harmful to our economy, it is an issue that is far too deep in the system and can no longer be up for change. They contend that corruption cannot be avoided and attempting to eradicate it is impossible. Numerous Filipinos have already given up trying to put an end to corruption and have decided that it is no longer worth fighting for. However, this way of thinking only allows corruption to grow stronger and harder to put an end to.

Any form of stealing from taxpayers should never be normalized, especially in a country where various issues are still ongoing. Even the tiniest form of corruption weakens our economy; what more if trillions were involved? Those who are involved with such immoral acts must be held accountable and face the consequences for committing a serious crime against the nation's economy and billions of Filipinos. A government guided with competence and integrity must come into play in order to establish a nation that is not flooded with corruption and foster growth within the country.

Filipino youth hold a vital role in attaining social change and ending the crime of corruption in our country. With the courage to question what is right or wrong, the youth must use their voice to challenge the unjust systems and bring out accountability. Through their participation in this fight against corruption, we may push for leaders who embody transparency and honesty.

Corruption has long been flooding our nation, constantly draining our institutions and slowing our country's growth. It will only remain if people choose to stay silent. It is the Filipinos' right and responsibility to demand honesty from those in power who promised to serve the people for the betterment of the country. Allowing corruption to grow continuously will not only lead to our money being stolen but also our future. It is a call to action that we must do something to end the acts of stealing from Filipinos.

August 25, 2025 | National Heroes Day

Today, August 25, 2025, we honor the courage and sacrifice of our heroes—both named in history and the many unknown, who gave their all for our freedom. Their bravery lives on in every act of hope, unity, and love for our nation, guiding us toward a brighter and stronger future.

As we remember their legacy, may we be inspired to become everyday heroes in our own ways through kindness, service, and responsibility. The spirit of heroism is not only found in the past, but also in the choices we make today for the generations to come.

SIUALA EDITORIAL | Remembering a Hero, Awakening a Nation

Every year, on August 21, the nation pauses to commemorate the death of Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.—a man whose sacrifice helped ignite the flames of democracy, awakened a generation of Filipinos from silence and fear, and sparked a collective cry for freedom that ultimately led to the liberation of the Philippines.

Despite exile, imprisonment, and threats to his life, Ninoy returned to the Philippines knowing full well the dangers that awaited him. He once said, “The Filipino is worth dying for.” These words were not empty rhetoric, but a conviction that despite struggles and hardships, the Filipino people deserved freedom and a better future. His death became a catalyst that united millions, inspiring citizens to stand against dictatorship and oppression.

We honor Ninoy Aquino by embracing the values he lived and died for: courage, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the people. This means holding our leaders accountable, defending our freedoms, and refusing to be passive when injustice prevails. Remembering him is not only about looking back at his sacrifice, but also about challenging ourselves to believe, as he did, that the Filipino is worth dying for.

As we look back on Ninoy Aquino’s life, we must also look forward. We strive to build the nation we aspire to become. If Ninoy believed the Filipino was worth dying for, perhaps we should believe that the Philippines is worth living for. Through our daily choices and commitment to service, we can keep his dream alive.

SIUALA FEATURE | Father, Friend, and Teacher of the Youth

During a time when children are often neglected and left in poverty without education, who will stand as someone who has a caring heart for the youth? The story of Saint John Bosco is far different than the ordinary. He was not only a simple priest; he was a devoted father, friend, and teacher of the youth. His dedication to guiding, teaching, and loving young minds continues to be a lifelong value today.

Despite living in poverty, young John Bosco found meaningful ways where he could combine enjoyment with faith and fun with meaning. During his youth, Bosco showed an outstanding gift of uniting his fellow youth and other people through fun ways like storytelling and magic tricks. Evidently so, he never ended his day without reflection and prayer.

As Bosco got older, he joined the seminary and became a priest, wherein he encountered a growing problem of poverty and homelessness. Because of this, numerous boys and girls were left without a home or education. However, due to his tender heart and concern for the youth, he saw the children as young people who needed love, care, and guidance rather than delinquents. Through the Oratory, he welcomed and gave shelter to the children, where they were able to learn, play, and grow in faith.

The “Preventive System” was then established to foster reason, religion, and loving-kindness in education, rather than harsh punishments. Don Bosco believed that when children are loved and cared for, they will grow. This belief became a revolutionary virtue during a time when strictness was the acknowledged norm.

What makes Don Bosco a remarkable saint in today’s time and age is not just about what he did, but more about how he did it. It is about how he taught children to combine the profound acts of learning, playing, and loving while growing in faith. His life teaches us that holiness and our faith is not only isolated in deep prayer but also in play, laughter, and caring for others.

Siuala is more than just a club; it is a family that cultivates young minds to become the best version of themselves.

Siuala means “voice”—and that is what we give premium to. One of the club's mantras is to give voice to the voiceless so that your voices can be heard. Aside from that, it is also our primary goal to give light to those who want to be seen for them to shine brighter than before.

Moreover, Siuala is the home of young journalists who advocate for the truth and betterment of the world. As we continue our adventure this school year 2025-2026, Siuala is here as a guide to your journey of becoming a journalist who will be heard and seen.

Together, let us write meaningful stories, inform the uneducated, and inspire people to become a star.
