The statement: โPumili kayo ng sponsor at ibibigay koโ (Choose a sponsor and I will give them to you)โis clearly unacceptable and must not be dismissed as a mere joke that slipped from one's mouth. It is a clear example of a rampant and culture of gender-based oppression, whereas women are reduced to merely "objects" or "prizes" to be handed out easily by the ones with power. Additionally, it made the cadets uncomfortable as they heard this statement from the said personnel.
This also clearly shows how system reflects masochism, power-tripping, and gender-based oppression. Furthermore, It degrades the institution with this action from someone whose practicing discipline yet failed to uphold integrity towards women.
Such behavior is not only a breach of institutional conduct but is also punishable under Philippine law given:
โข๐๐๐ฉ๐ฎ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐๐๐ญ ๐๐จ. ๐๐๐๐๐ (๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ฉ๐๐๐๐ฌ ๐๐๐ญ ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐๐), strictly prohibits gender-based sexual harassment in educational and training institutions. It penalizes misogynistic slurs and any conduct that creates an intimidating or offensive environment based on gender.
โข๐๐๐ฉ๐ฎ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐๐๐ญ ๐๐จ. ๐๐๐๐ (๐๐ง๐ญ๐ข-๐๐๐ฑ๐ฎ๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐๐ญ ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐๐), mandates that individuals in authority within educational or training environments have a duty to prevent sexual harassment. Using students as "incentives" constitutes a grave abuse of power. And;
โข๐๐๐ฉ๐ฎ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐๐๐ญ ๐๐จ. ๐๐๐๐ (๐๐๐ ๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ ๐จ๐ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ง), affirms the right of women to be protected from all forms of violence and discrimination, ensuring their dignity and human rights are upheld in all spheres of society.
We, in solidarity of the Student Body demands Transparency, Accountability, Justice, and an apology to strengthen institutional safeguarding.
Education should liberate individuals.
Students must be heard.
Women should be respected and dignified.
Additionally, the SLSU-Lucban ROTC Unit posted their own statement regarding the incident. But the narrative did not clearly focused on apologizing to the Student Body. Instead, it warped towards targeting progressive groups via Red-tagging which has no direct involvement on the incident. An action that led to taking down their own post on Facebook.
The deleted post also stated โWe encourage all students to be informed, engaged, and proactive in promoting peace and security on campus and in our communities.โ You cannot encourage the students when you yourselves are the ones threatening that peace and security within the campus.
In any case that the SLSU-Lucban ROTC Unit really condemns harassment, sexism, and abuse of power and wants to promote peace and security within and outside the campus. Then they should be accountable for the incident instead of shifting the focus towards red-tagging.
This marks a failed and disappointing action from their ranks. We also encourage to have solidarity with the Students, by being aware, critical, and vocal of the current situation within and outside of the University.
