𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻'𝘁 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝗮 𝘃𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱—𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮🌈

In geospatial analysis, once discrete coordinates are transformed into a continuous raster surface, they become an entirely different data structure. They are interpreted differently, analyzed differently, and represented differently. To insist that a raster is still a vector is to disregard what it is. Likewise, if that raster is later vectorized, it does not mean the previous format was the only authentic one—it simply reflects another way of representing the same information. Identity, much like the landscapes we study, is not always fixed. It evolves, exists along spectrums, and cannot always be confined to rigid categories or predefined baselines.

The maps we create remind us that there is never only one way to understand the world. 𝐃𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡. Every map projection preserves certain truths while distorting others, proving that no single perspective can capture reality in its entirety. The same can be said of the people around us. 𝐍𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐩 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐧𝐞. Some things become clearer only when viewed beyond visible light, and some stories are only understood when we are willing to see beyond what has always been considered "normal." Even in GIS, 𝐍𝐨𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐧𝐨 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞. The places left blank on a map are not empty—they simply remind us that there is still more to discover. 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝, because every feature exists.

As students of forestry, we witness these lessons in nature itself. A thriving forest is never defined by a single species, nor does it survive through uniformity. 𝐀 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬; 𝐧𝐞𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲. Biodiversity is what allows ecosystems to remain resilient, adapt to change, and flourish through time. Nature has never fit neatly into one classification, and many of its processes exist beyond binary definitions. Diversity is not an exception to nature—it is one of its fundamental strengths.

This Pride Month, the 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 – 𝐔𝐏𝐋𝐁 celebrates the richness of diversity in our forests, in our maps, and in our communities. As future foresters and environmental stewards, may we continue to create spaces where every individual is seen, respected, and represented for who they truly are. After all, protecting diversity should never stop at ecosystems—it should also extend to the people who call them home.

𝗣𝗛𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗣𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗘 𝗔𝗥𝗕𝗢𝗥 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 🌳🌱

Today, June 25, we celebrate 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐚𝐲, a nationwide observance that promotes environmental stewardship through tree planting and related conservation initiatives. Institutionalized through Presidential Proclamation No. 643 and Republic Act No. 10176, this annual event mandates every able-bodied Filipino aged 12 years old and above to plant at least one tree each year in support of ecological restoration and sustainable development.

Trees play a vital role in sustaining life on Earth. They help regulate climate, conserve biodiversity, protect watersheds, reduce soil erosion, and support the well-being of both present and future generations. Yet while tree planting remains an important step toward a greener future, the success of restoration efforts does not end when a seedling is placed in the ground.

As future foresters and environmental stewards, we recognize that planting a tree is only the beginning. Young seedlings face numerous challenges—from competition with weeds and extreme weather conditions to pests, diseases, and human disturbances. Without proper care, protection, and monitoring, many planted seedlings may never reach maturity. True environmental stewardship requires long-term commitment, ensuring that planted trees survive, grow, and eventually become thriving forests.

This Philippine Arbor Day, the 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 – 𝐔𝐏𝐋𝐁 calls on everyone to look beyond planting and embrace the responsibility of nurturing what we grow. Through continued care, monitoring, protection, and environmental action, we can transform seedlings into forests and aspirations into lasting change.
