In celebration of 128th Philippine Independence Day
Today, as we commemorate the 𝟏𝟐𝟖𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, we honor the bravery, sacrifice, and invaluable patriotism of the men and women who fought for our nation's freedom. Their courage secured our right to live in a sovereign country, free from the oppression and injustices imposed upon our people.
As we remember their sacrifices, we are called not only to reflect on their heroism but also to embrace the responsibilities they entrusted to future generations. The freedom we enjoy today was won through their blood, perseverance, and love for the motherland. In return, we are tasked with protecting, nurturing, and enriching the nation they fought so dearly to liberate.
Commemorating our heroes' sacrifices is inseparable from fulfilling our responsibilities to the environment, particularly to our forests. A healthy and thriving forest stands as a testament to the values of stewardship, resilience, and love for country that our forebears embodied.
According to the 2022 Philippine Forestry Statistics, the country has an estimated forest cover of only 7.22 million hectares, representing approximately 24.07% of the nation's total land area. This is significantly lower than the 17.8 million hectares of forest cover recorded in 1934 and dramatically reduced from the extensive forests that once blanketed the archipelago before the arrival of Spanish colonizers. Historical accounts estimate that forest cover reached as much as 90-92% of the country's land area prior to colonization. Long before 1521, forests were deeply woven into the fabric of Filipino life. Indigenous communities maintained a connected relationship with nature, guided by belief systems and ecological knowledge that promoted harmony between people and the environment.
The destruction of our forests mirrors many of the injustices our ancestors endured under colonial rule. Just as our forebears were deprived of their rights and sovereignty, our natural resources have long been subjected to exploitation and neglect. Although political independence was achieved, our forests continue to suffer from unsustainable practices, environmental degradation, and human indifference. The steady decline of forest cover serves as a reminder that freedom must be continuously safeguarded, not only from foreign domination, but also from the neglect of our shared responsibilities as citizens.
𝐓𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞'𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝. We cannot claim to be truly free if our forests and ecosystems remain trapped in a cycle of destruction. Forests are far more than collections of trees; they are living ecosystems that sustain biodiversity, regulate climate, protect watersheds, and support countless communities. Genuine patriotism demands a commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
The 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 - 𝐔𝐏𝐋𝐁, 𝐈𝐧𝐜. joins the nation in commemorating this historic day. We stand at the intersection of the past and the future, carrying forward the legacy of our heroes through our commitment to forest conservation, environmental education, and sustainable resource management. We believe that true independence flourishes when both people and nature thrive together. As future forestry professionals and environmental leaders, we are called to restore degraded landscapes, advocate for sustainable forest management, advance environmental awareness, and inspire communities to become responsible stewards of the environment. Let us honor the sacrifices of our heroes by ensuring that the Philippines remains vibrant, resilient, and green for generations to come.
