Inspired by the story of the woolly mammoth 🦣, our advocacy is a call to 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 and 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 in which they thrive.

We all know that bacteria is something that we should be wary of, but did you know that other bacteria has to be wary of bacteria too?! 𝐁𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐨 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐬 is a type of “predatory bacteria” that preys on other bacteria by invading their cell walls, draining them of their internal contents, and eventually multiplying inside them.

𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐚 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐈𝐧𝐜.

Katala Foundation, Inc. (KFI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting biological resources and threatened endemic wildlife in Palawan, including the Philippine Cockatoo, Palawan Forest Turtle, and Palawan Porcupine. Through community involvement, scientific research, conservation breeding, and ecosystem-based approaches, KFI works to safeguard wildlife and the habitats they depend on.

UP LVSA chose KFI because its advocacy reflects the message behind the organization’s woolly mammoth and ice theme: the importance of protecting species and their habitats before they are lost. The extinction of the woolly mammoth serves as a reminder of how environmental changes and human activities can contribute to biodiversity loss. KFI’s work in wildlife rescue, research, conservation, and community education demonstrates how proactive conservation can help prevent similar declines among threatened Philippine species and preserve the country’s unique biodiversity.

These behaviors, known as stereotypies and vices, are actually psychological and physiological responses to stress, confinement, boredom, or digestive pain. In fact, wild horses rarely show them, earning them the nickname "diseases of domestication."

Quick Checklist for a Stereotypy-Free Barn:
✅ 𝗠𝗮𝘅 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲: Free-choice hay/roughage keeps stomach acid low and chewing time high
✅ 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗱 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲: Allow turnout with companions to meet their social needs
✅ 𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: Use food balls, stable toys, and varied enrichment
✅ 𝗩𝗲𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁: Always rule out physical pain or gastric discomfort before changing routines
