Before you write your first LB Times article, step into the booth of Radyo DZLB, capture stories through DSL episodes, or discover the many ways communication can create change, you're already getting a 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗨𝗣 𝗔𝗗𝗦.

By the time you are reading this, perhaps something has started to look different. The Pride posts in your Facebook timeline may have thinned out, or maybe the rainbow flag in your favorite coffee shops has already retired. And the month, as months usually do, simply ended. For many, June 30 is simply an anticipation for the next month.

The LGBTQIA+ community, however, does not get to simply turn the calendar page. The SOGIE bill sits unfinished in someone's desk at the congress, where it has been shelved for decades. Someone out there could have been asked to tone themselves down at the family reunion. Somewhere, a transgender friend may still be carrying a government ID that does not reflect who they are. Your favorite parlorista's presence may still be treated as a punchline. None of these realities dissolve when July arrives. Because Pride is not merely a month of celebration. It is, above all, a reminder that the struggle is far from over.

UP ADS refuses to be the kind of ally that packs up with a simple change of profile picture in your feed. We commit to carrying the fight of our community past the calendar; in our advocacies, in our spaces, in the work we choose to do and refuse to abandon. We ask the Filipino people to advance our struggle and champion our solidarity. Because for us, solidarity, if it means anything at all, was never meant to be occasional 🏳️‍🌈

The sem was definitely a blast, and these achievements are proof that consistency, a whole lot of determination, and a little bit of fun pay off!

Push lang, because more wins are coming in the next sems! 🙌

Independence was never just about removing foreign flags. It was a promise that Filipinos would finally have control over their own lives, their land, their voice, and their future. One hundred twenty-eight years have passed since that promise was made. And for millions of Filipino people, it is still waiting to be kept.

Today, farmers still till land they do not own. Journalists still face threats for telling the truth. Families still choose between eating and paying rent. Young people still leave the country not because they want to, but because staying feels like giving up. These are not small problems at the edges of our society. They are, unfortunately, the shape of it.

As development communication students, we are trained to ask on who gets to tell the story and what gets out. Independence Day is often told as a story of triumph. But triumph for whom when the same systems that kept us poor and fragile under colonizers have simply changed faces. They were never truly out.

The chains today are economic, political, and cultural. And these are very much evident to the crisis that we are witnessing. With the faces of Marcos and Duterte in our halls; with the power that syndicate like Quiboloy has; and with the systemic corruption that rules our daily lives, independence hardly gets the chance to meet us.

Today, we call on every Filipino to treat this day as a reminder of how much work is still left. UP ADS remains firm that freedom is not simply a date on the calendar. It is something that we, up to this very moment, have to build.

Until it becomes real for everyone, not just for the few.
