In observance of the World's Oceans Month, the Youth Climate Navigators (YCN), in partnership with Kalami Spirits Arts, successfully conducted Kagasangan Heritage of the Sea: Advancing Coral Reef Stewardship through Environmental and Conservation Education, empowering youth and local communities to become stewards of marine conservation.
The lecture series featured Ms. Fraulein Jan O. Calumpiano, YCN Marine Scientist, who highlighted the Philippines' exceptional coral biodiversity as the heart of the Coral Triangle. She discussed the ecological importance of coral reefs, the growing threats they face, from climate change to destructive human activities, and the urgent actions needed to protect and restore these vital marine ecosystems.
Meanwhile, Mr. Charlie Gumarang Juampit, YCN Environmental Scientist and Environmental Planning Manager, presented key provisions of the Philippine Fisheries Code, emphasizing the importance of sustainable fisheries management and community participation. He also introduced the Ridge-to-Reef and Coastal Green Belt approaches to community-based conservation, alongside practical solutions for sustainable island development, including proper solid waste management, ecotourism, ecosystem restoration, and climate-resilient coastal planning.
These discussions reinforced that safeguarding our coral reefs requires science-based conservation, strong community engagement, and collective action. As we continue to celebrate our Kagasangan, our coral heritage, we remain committed to inspiring the next generation of ocean stewards who will protect our seas for generations to come.
