Valenzuela City top-bills the Philippines contribution to the Pure Earth Impact Report 2026. Thus, in our Philippines Lead Prevention Spotlight Series this ILPPW 2026, we will first feature this local government case study showing how detection and assessment can be translated into institutionalized prevention. The episode highlights the City’s ordinance, technical working group (TWG) experience, blood lead level (BLL) screening, source assessments, Lead-Safe settings approaches, and the emerging Lead-Safe City model.

In observance of International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (ILPPW) 2026, Pure Earth Philippines is producing a short video series that documents the Philippines’ current efforts to detect lead exposure, respond to health risks, identify and control sources, and strengthen prevention. The series recognizes ongoing work by government institutions, local governments, health professionals, industry, civil society, and other partners.

This year, Ghana and India (Tamil Nadu) each secured regulatory wins restricting lead in cookware, and Mexico is advancing lead prevention through a review of its ceramics standards and a new National Strategy on lead exposure. The webinar brings these three efforts into one conversation about what it took to win government support, and what it will take to turn regulation into real reductions in lead poisoning in children.

It’s International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, the World Health Organization (WHO)’s annual call to action on lead. This year’s theme is “From Detection to Prevention.” At Pure Earth, we’re focused on scaling both.

Meet the Pure Earth SCALE Initiative (Scaling Country Action on Lead Exposure), our largest-ever effort to prevent lead exposure. Developed with and supported by The Audacious Project and a consortium of donors, SCALE will work with governments in countries home to 550 million children to:

-Reveal the true extent of lead exposure
-Pinpoint where it’s coming from
-Prevent exposure at national scale

Our new Global Lead Program impact report documents progress across 11 countries — including The Philippines, being cited as one of the clearest examples in the entire portfolio of a government leading its own response, independently and sustainably. NEW REPORT: The path to a lead-free future runs through governments that measure, regulate, and enforce on their own. Our 2026 Impact Report shows that path taking shape in 11 countries.

A few highlights:
- Ghana set its first legal limit on lead in cookware.
- Bangladesh adopted a national strategy through 2035 and took enforcement action against 57 illegal battery recycling sites.
- Ethiopia committed to cutting childhood blood lead levels 60% by 2030.
- Valenzuela City passed the Philippines’ first city-level lead ordinance and funds testing from its own budget.
- Peru’s Public Prosecutor’s Office put lead-contaminated consumer goods on its oversight agenda.

Valenzuela Lead TWG met to discuss how to strengthen the coordination and capacitation among TWG member offices, source assessment and interventions, and program sustainability in support of their landmark Lead Poisoning Prevention and Child Protection Ordinance.

It will be a year after the passage of the said Ordinance and the donation of the LeadCare II analyzer.

The City’s accomplishments will be featured in the upcoming International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week celebration. Stay tuned!

We appreciate the capacity of DA-PhilRice, hence the ongoing coordination in developing a research that will investigate lead levels in the country’s staple food, rice and surrounding environments in major rice-producing areas.

Pure Earth Philippines remains committed to study exposure sources and pathways of lead contamination to the general population in order to develop the most needed and appropriate interventions.
