People and the Sea

People and the Sea People and the Sea is supporting local management of marine resources in the Philippines To be successful, the program needs to achieve longevity.

People and the Sea was created out of a passion for the marine environment, and a desire to see it conserved for future generations while still offering a sustainable livelihood to the communities who are so reliant on it. We are embarking on an ambitious program that seeks to enhance the lives of the people of Malapascua. Our first step is the establishment of a volunteer tourism expedition progr

am on the island. While the initial setup of the project has been privately funded, the longer term sustainability of the project relies on the ongoing participation of both foreign and local volunteers. In considering this, we feel it is essential that the expeditions we offer provide the participants with a safe, educational, fulfilling and most of all, inspiring, experience. By the end of our first year of operations, People and the Sea will:

Establish an ongoing coral reef monitoring and biodiversity assessment programme on 25-30 sites
Develop a science training program for the local community
Create a habitat map of Malapascua’s waters and a usage map of Malapascua’s waters (fishing and diving sites)
Perform a socio-economic survey to identify main fishing methods, and sources of income. This will inform the investigation of what alternative sources of income could be developed on Malapascua
Establish effective communication links with the local community/stakeholders that permit the dissemination of the information we gather.

Today, fisherfolk leaders, barangay officials, BFAR Region VII, the Municipal Government of Daanbantayan. and partner organizations gathered for a dialogue on a simple but important reality: the fisheries that sustain our communities are interconnected.

Fishers from Malapascua, Carnaza, Maya, Tapilon, and Talisay may come from different communities, but many depend on the same fishing grounds and target similar fisheries resources.

This workshop creates a space to learn from one another, reflect on shared fisheries realities, and explore how community knowledge and fisheries data can support stronger fisheries management.

This Labor Day, we look to the sea. 🌊

We honor the coastal families of Malapascua and Higatangan, Carnaza and the islands that surround them — the fishers, the reef monitors, the families who have long called these waters home and have dedicated their lives to protecting them.

Their labor is quiet, often unseen, but it is the heartbeat of our marine resource management and biodiversity protection mission. 🌊🇵🇭

At People and the Sea, we know a healthy ocean begins with people who are supported, respected, and empowered. When we protect marine resources, we protect the livelihoods and futures of those who work hardest to sustain them.

This Labor Day, honor a ‘Blue Worker.’ Drop a 💙 in the comments for the fisherfolk and community members keeping our oceans alive.

These are the most important fishes in Malapascua Island — and here's why it matters.

From 2023 to 2025, we worked alongside local fisherfolk to monitor 5 sites, recording 149 kinds of fish as part of an ocean "health check." This data tells us which fish are most heavily caught, and what we need to protect.

Lagaw ranked #1 with 38,550.21 kg recorded, reinforcing our mission to protect key species and maintain healthy fish stocks without compromising fisher livelihoods.

Knowing which fish are most caught is just the first step. Divers, volunteers, and locals all play a role in keeping this data meaningful by learning to identify these species and understanding the balance of our marine ecosystem.

But we can't do this without your support. Your contribution helps our team continue monitoring, protecting, and maintaining fish stocks for future generations.

"The ocean is losing fish, and communities are paying the price.

Oceana has found that the Philippines is losing 45 million kilos of fish every year, putting food security in the country at risk.

🐟 88% of assessed fish stocks are already overfished
📉 National catch has dropped dramatically in just over a decade
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Millions of people who depend on fishing for food and income are at risk

This scarcity has a nationwide effect, with fish being the Philippines’ primary source of protein.

Protecting coastal waters, stopping illegal fishing, and supporting small-scale fishers can help rebuild fisheries and secure food for future generations."

Years ago, fishermen asked us a simple but powerful question: “How can we help protect the sea?”

These are the same communities often blamed for biodiversity loss. Yet for them, the ocean is everything — their livelihood, their culture, their home.

When we support small-scale fishermen to take part in Marine Protected Area management and adopt sustainable fishing practices, we turn care into action.

Join us in empowering coastal communities to protect the sea.
