• The Social Experiment
Perhaps the image that comes to mind when one thinks of Generation Z is just a teen hovering over a desktop, browsing, posting, commenting, or even shopping online. It's hard not to confine them to these stereotypes, as they are a generation that has never known a world without modern technology. But with them often at the forefront of changes in this rapidly advancing world, they are unlikely not to have anything to offer the world.

To shed light on this matter, Group 3 of 11 - HUMSS A conducted a social experiment to evaluate Gen Z's abilities to identify underlying issues behind various political actions, to assess their critical thinking and analytical decision-making skills when life is at stake, to present competence that they can apply when they begin to lead the country in the future, and to demonstrate how much more politically and socially aware they are than is being given credit for.

• The Gen Z: What is Seen is not Always What is Underneath
The Gen Z's - colloquially known as the Zoomers - are the people between the ages 11 to 26. Older Gen Z's are known to socialize with their peers, but also with people a step or two behind their generation. Gen Z kids, however, are said to always wear distracting and boisterous clothing to make up for their lack of social intelligence. Many also claim that Gen Z kids waste their entire lives on social media as they pretend to care about contemporary issues.

However, what people is see is not always what lies underneath.

In our social experiment, we looked for Gen Z students to provide input in our interview. That is when it was made clear; the youth is much more open-minded and much deeper than many people think.

We, the Gen Z, know where, how, and when to speak.

We know what we stand for.

• The Gen Z: Stereotypes
The advent of the Internet has made the stereotypes regarding the behavior of us Gen Z teens all the more controversial. As such, we are sometimes subjected to discrimination from other generations. In The Oplan Talk-hang Corner, we dream of spreading awareness to others through interviews about the Oplan Tokhang that the Gen Z is not as bad as they think. Stereotypes cannot be prevented, but they can definitely be disproven.

Stay strong, our fellow Gen Z! 💖

• The Gen Z: Our Hope for the Future
When it is bad, there is good. This can also apply to the prejudices towards Gen Z; when there are negative claims, there are positive ones. While a few bad apples can make the bunch questionable, that does not mean that the entire basket is bad. Gen Z, like any other generation, is capable of possessing intelligence and discipline. And though some may seem unpalatable to others, they do not make up the entire population of Gen Z.

Don't let negative stereotypes make you lose hope for the future of the world. Gen Z is yet to mature and surprise everyone with our potential!

• The Gen Z: Misconceptions
Many say that the Gen Z's are some of the loudest and most foolish generations in the world. However, according to an article from Daily Northwestern, the Gen Z is the most educated generation up to date.

Remember that not every Gen Z shares the same bad stereotypes! While some of us can be definitely be a pain, they do not make up the majority of our population. They just happen to be very loud in social media which gives others the illusion that all Gen Z's are terrible.

• The Operation in Hindsight
Oplan Tokhang did reduce the country's crime rate. This gave other people a sense of security, but the loved ones of those killed did not feel the same way. Oplan Tokhang is never a long-term solution to our country's illegal drug addiction and distribution. In some cases, suspects are not given due process, and if they resist, especially if they are innocent, they kill the suspected drug users right away, which is inappropriate on every level. It may be a solution to the war on illegal drug use; however, if abused by higher-ups, its flaw is that it can be used to silence and violate the critics’ human rights.

• Review:
Oplan Tokhang is a drug-fighting operation launched by the Philippine National Police in 2016. Police officers go door-to-door in search of illegal drug activity and to persuade suspected drug users and dealers to surrender. However, some critics argue that the operation is not long-term sustainable and violates human rights. Extrajudicial killings and forced surrenders have been reported as part of the Oplan Tokhang operation. This means that people are being killed without due process, and suspects are being coerced into surrendering despite the lack of evidence against them. This is a violation of the right to life and the right to due process, both of which are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

-----What is the Oplan Tokhang?-----

The Oplan Tokhang was an operation carried out by the Philippine National Police (PNP) in 2016 as a solution to the War on Drugs. Originally, the operation involved policemen visiting the houses of illegal drug users and lecturing them with the harmful effects of illegal drugs in order to stop the users from buying, using, or selling illegal drugs. In this operation, the police officers were allowed to defend themselves if the suspects retaliates. However, this took a bad turn as most policemen carry a gun when visiting the homes. Shootings occurred, leading the other illegal drug users to believe that the policemen are there to kill them above all else. There had also been cases of corrupted policemen planting drugs in the suspect's home whenever the policemen killed the wrong person to avoid repercussions. This lead to the spreading of fear even among ordinary citizens as they thought that they, too, could be subjected to the extrajudicial killings.

-----What does the Gen Z have to do with this?-----

Many citizens of the Generation Z are born around the mid 1990s until 2012. By the time the Oplan Tokhang was carried out, many young Gen Z's (especially those born in 2005-2012) had to live through the chaos brought by the corrupt policemen of the operation. Most were subjected to televised news of the extrajudicial killings everyday while some their lost loved ones due to misunderstandings at the time of the Oplan Tokhang. Nearly seven years have passed and many of these young Gen Z children are now either teens or adults, capable of forming their own opinions regarding the matter. We, The Oplan Talk-hang Corner, believe that by interviewing Gen Z students about the Oplan Tokhang, we will be able to extract a unique perspective on the operation that we can use to deduce the general beliefs and opinions of the Gen Z.
