A Catholic bishop stood at a Pride Mass in 2024, apologized to gay people for what the Church had done to them, then handed the microphone to a drag queen. Pope Leo just put him in charge of a California diocese.

The bishop is Ramón Bejarano, and he didn't hedge it. "I apologize for the pain and distress that I and the Church have caused to many of you," he told the congregation, adding that too many had been told they were not worthy of the love of God. In February he was installed as bishop of Monterey.

He isn't the only one. Archbishop James Checchio, whose New Jersey diocese made LGBTQ+ outreach a genuine priority, now leads New Orleans. Fr. Thomas Hennen, who helped write Iowa guidelines urging the Church to actually listen to trans people, is now the youngest bishop running a US diocese.

Christopher Hale, the former Obama staffer who tracks this pope on his Substack Letters from Leo, put his finger on why it matters more than any press release: "Rome decides its great questions in assemblies and documents, but it decides much earlier (sometimes years earlier) who will be in the room when the questions get asked."

​Trust is the quiet currency of human connection. We invest it slowly, offering glimpses of our scars, our secrets, and our deepest traumas in exchange for safety and understanding. But what happens when that sacred currency is counterfeited? We must remain vigilant against those who weaponize our vulnerabilities, turning our confidences into ammunition. If someone uses your pain against you, they were never your friend.

🚩​The Hidden Motives Behind the Mask

​When a confidant turns adversary, it rarely happens by accident. The betrayal usually stems from one of several dark motivations:

1. ​Deep-Seated Animosity: They harbor a quiet, lingering resentment, wearing the mask of companionship while waiting for the right moment to strike.

2. ​Secretive Competition: They view life as a zero-sum game, tracking your achievements and using your weaknesses to level the playing field in their own minds.

It is a profound, often exhausting struggle for identity—a courageous battle to embrace one’s true self in a world that too frequently judges, criticizes, and discriminates. This constant weight takes a heavy toll on a young person's mental well-being.

​A Reflective Thought
​Ask yourself:

Are we raising children who feel safe enough to be entirely honest with us, or are we inadvertently teaching them to hide parts of their soul just to keep our approval? True parenting isn't about forcing a door open before a child is ready; it is about standing steadfastly by that door so they know that whenever they step through, they will be met with open arms.

​What Our Children Need From Us

*​An ear that listens to understand, not to judge or correct.
