Ang mga mangrove forest ay kilalang may mga benepisyo sa ekolohiya, na nagsisilbing natural na mga hadlang laban sa mga storm surge, pagguho ng baybayin at pagbaha sa baybayin, pati na rin ang mga habitat at pinagmumulan ng pagkain ng wildlife.

Higit sa lahat, kumikilos sila bilang “carbon sinks” na nagpapababa ng greenhouse gas emissions, na siyang pangunahing driver ng climate change.

“Ang ating mga bakawan ay lumalaban sa climate change sa pamamagitan ng pag-iimbak ng malaking bulto ng atmospheric carbon. Halimbawa, mayroon tayong mga industriya ng fossil fuel mula sa industriya ng transportasyon. Siyempre, naglalabas sila ng maraming carbon. Karamihan sa carbon na ito ay talagang nakaimbak sa mga lupa ng bakawan,” sinabi ni Matthew Tabilog, founder ng Mangrove Matters PH, sa isang interview ng VERA Files.

World Peatlands Day is celebrated on 2nd June each year. It was launched by the International Peatland Society (IPS) and correlates with the date when the draft constitution of the IPS was adopted at an international symposium in Aberdeen in 1967.

The aim is to raise awareness of the importance of peatlands and peat across the world, including temperate, tropical, and boreal peatland habitats.

Philippines Mangrove Rehabilitation

Recognizing mangroves’ role in addressing climate change and protecting against storms, the Philippines is developing a road map to increase mangrove cover by at least 20% by 2030.

“To effectively do that, we need to do science-based, community-managed mangrove restoration to ensure we avoid the mangrove planting in unsuitable areas,” says Jocel Pangilinan, climate resilience program director at Conservation International Philippines, which initiated the creation of the road map with the government.
