These are the eight words from Taylor Swiftโs August that are etched in the minds of many, changing the trajectory of how people view different aspects of their lives. Originally, the song paints an image of a fleeting summer romance, tied to the bittersweet weight of unrequited love. However, those eight words were made to resonate something far beyond a heartbreak. It describes a way of existing, having a relentless, quiet courage that chooses to believe in what could be, even when life feels uncertain.
In healthcare, those eight words are not just a poetic phrase. It is an anthem of survival and purpose. Nursing school is written as a rugged path you travel through in order to reach a dream. There are moments when the pathway feels as if itโs too steepโmoments when doubt haunts you, when your castles seem to crumble brick-by-brick, and when the emotional demands of patient care weigh heavy on your young heart. Sometimes, when you stare at your ceiling late at night, you ask yourself, โTama pa ba โtong ginagawa ko?โ , asking the universe to give you a sign. In those moments, hope becomes a conscious choice.
To be a nursing student means to willingly embrace the friction between where you are now and where you aspire to be. You do not stay up studying or get up early for hospital duties for the reason that you donโt have any other choice. You do these things because you are grasping onto a vision of a future where you get to navigate your way to the dream youโve held onto maybe even before youโve set foot in college. You are living for the hope of your hands becoming a vessel for healing, your voice becoming a source of comfort, and your presence becoming a beacon of reassurance in someoneโs darkest moments.
As the angels of the sickroom, we donโt think of hope as naive wishful thinking. Hope is a belief that in every hour we spend studying, in every clinical shift we finish, in every mastered skill and concept, and in every gentle word we let go to our patients is building a foundation that will one day save the lives of many. In this journey, every demand of sacrifice is rewarded with the privilege of healing and serving humanity.
As summer ends and as the seasons change, those eight words remain. For the future nurses, you must remember that hope is a quiet promise telling you that every step you take is leading towards a life of great purpose. It is a steady conviction reminding you that reaching for your dreams is not just for yourself. It is a gift you will share with every patient that will receive your comfort and care. So, in times of doubt, all you need is a tiny reminder of why you started this nursing journey: ๐๐ผ ๐น๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ต๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ถ๐ ๐ฎ๐น๐น.
