CARDINAL PREVOST ELECTED POPE LEO XIV

(Vatican City) - In a historic conclave, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the new Pontiff, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. The announcement came yesterday from the Vatican, following a period of deliberation by the College of Cardinals.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Cardinal Prevost (69) brings a wealth of experience to the papacy. His extensive service includes years as a missionary in Peru and two terms as the head of the Augustinian order. Prior to his election, he served as the Prefect of the Dicastery for the Bishops, a role that saw him involved in recent papal journeys and the Synod on Synodality.

Created a Cardinal by Pope Francis in 2024, Pope Leo XIV's background in missionary work and his recent involvement in the central governance of the Church suggest a papacy focused on global outreach and continued dialogue on the future of the Catholic Church.
