The 60 Degrees Opening

Have you ever taken a second to really look at the Compasses resting on the Altar? Most of us are so used to seeing the Square and Compasses together that we don't always stop to ask: “Why is it opened to that specific angle?”

In many of our Lodges, you’ll find the Compasses set precisely at 60 degrees. It’s not a random choice made for the sake of looking symmetrical on social media or a car decal. It’s actually a masterclass in geometry and deep symbolism.

The Power of the Equilateral Triangle

When you open those legs to 60°, you aren't just making an angle; you are creating the foundation for an equilateral triangle. In our tradition, this represents perfect balance. It’s a silent reminder that a life well-lived requires all parts of our character to be in harmony: wisdom, strength, and beauty working in unison.

The Mystery of the Circle and the "Seven"

Here is where the real "Art" comes in. If you take a pair of compasses set to 60° and draw a circle, the distance between the two points is exactly equal to the radius. This allows you to walk the compasses around the edge and divide the circle into six perfect parts.

If you count those six points plus the center where you started, you get seven. For any student of the Craft, that number resonates deeply pointing us toward the liberal arts, the sciences, and the completion of a master's work. It’s geometry hiding a spiritual lesson in plain sight.

The Seal of Balance

When that 60° angle meets the 90° of the Square, they create a visual "Seal." It’s a representation of the intersection between the celestial (the Compasses) and the terrestrial (the Square). It reminds us that while we keep our feet on the ground and act on the level, our aspirations should always reach toward something higher.

Whether you call it "The Craft," "The Art," or simply the way we live, these tools are more than just metal and wood. They are the blueprints for a better version of ourselves.

To all the Kuyang and Brethren out there—how do you apply the "circumscribing" of the Compasses in your busy daily lives?

Kuyang.

It's from the root word "Kuya", meaning older brother in Tagalog.

The term Kuya itself is derived from the Hokkien Chinese word 哥仔 (ko-iá). The suffix -ng in Tagalog is often used as a linker to add a level of endearment and intimacy to the title.

In Filipino culture (especially in Tagalog), “kuyang” means older brother or respected male peer. It carries respect, familiarity and a sense of hierarchy without being rigid.

In Masonic philosophy, every member is equal, yet there is a deep reverence for those who provide guidance. By using Kuyang, Masons emphasize that just as an older brother protects and guides his younger siblings, a Kuyang is expected to look after his brethren and offer "good counsel." It reinforces the idea that the Lodge is not just a club, but a family. Calling a fellow member Kuyang creates an immediate, unbreakable bond of kinship that the English word "Brother" sometimes feels too formal to capture.

It is a title of equality; whether a man is a Master Mason or a Past Master, he remains a Kuyang to his peers, reminding everyone that they all meet upon the Level.

Being a Kuyang, a Mason is expected to act dutifully as one. It is not simply a term used during lodge meetings or fellowship events. It's the word that bonds one mason to another, not just as simple social club members, but rather, as families for life.

Kuyangs help when necessary. Provides guidance when needed. Whisper good counsel when his brother veers from the righteous path.

A Kuyang lights the path for his younger brother as we continue to travel in our lifetime journey.

Being called one is not to be seen as a simple token of fraternal kinship. It's both a privilege and an obligation.

A privilege to be considered as a beloved older brother despite of our flaws and shortcomings as long as we strive to smoothen our rough edges.

An obligation to guide younger brethren to smoothen their own flaws without judgement, arrogance and humiliation.

We should act as the moral compass, not just for our own betterment but to be the beacon of upright living that those within the lodge could learn upon from.

Are you a Kuyang or simply pretending to be one?

Led by Worshipful Master Bro. Clark Daniel Ramos, the brethren of Dr. Filemon C. Aguilar (Las Piñas) Masonic Lodge No. 332 recently travelled South of Manila to participate in the 109th Annual Communication held in Tagaytay City.

The gathering was a powerful reminder of the unity within our Grand Lodge. By taking part in the sessions and the fellowships, our members were able to renew their fraternal ties and reflect on our shared goals. As a Lodge, we’re grateful for the experience and stay focused on upholding the tenets of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth both inside and outside the temple.
