Agape Academy to Host Screening of The Forge – A Life-Changing Film for Youth

Agape Academy is excited to announce an upcoming event that promises to inspire and challenge young people on their journey toward personal growth and purpose. On January 6 at 9am, the Academy will host a special screening of The Forge, a 2024 Christian drama film directed by Alex Kendrick, which tells the story of Isaiah Wright, a 19-year-old who is struggling to find direction in life.

The Forge follows Isaiah as he grapples with the realities of adulthood. A year after high school, Isaiah is stuck in a rut—unemployed, aimless, and at odds with his single mother, Cynthia. When Cynthia gives him an ultimatum to either step up or move out, Isaiah is forced to face his shortcomings. Despite his love for basketball and video games, he soon discovers that there’s more to life than the distractions he’s been relying on.

The turning point comes when Isaiah is hired by Moore Fitness, where he meets the owner, who will play a pivotal role in reshaping Isaiah’s understanding of responsibility, faith, and what it truly means to be a man. Through the guidance of his mentor and the prayers of his mother, Isaiah learns to confront his past, sacrifice his selfishness, and discover that God has a greater purpose for his life.

What Youth Can Learn from The Forge
The Forge is not just another coming-of-age story; it is a powerful reminder of the importance of faith, mentorship, and personal responsibility. The film highlights key lessons for young people navigating the challenges of adulthood:

- The Power of Mentorship: Isaiah’s life changes when he receives guidance from an unexpected source. The film demonstrates how a mentor can help shape character and provide the wisdom needed to make important decisions.
- The Importance of Responsibility: Isaiah’s journey is a wake-up call to those who may be avoiding the hard work of growing up. The Forge shows that maturity comes with responsibility, whether in relationships, work, or faith.
- Sacrificing Selfishness: A central theme in the movie is Isaiah’s transformation from a self-centered young man to someone willing to put others first. It encourages youth to look beyond their own desires and embrace the sacrifices needed to fulfill a higher purpose.
- Faith and Purpose: Above all, The Forge is a reminder that God has a unique plan for each life. Isaiah’s story challenges viewers to consider how faith can provide direction, hope, and the strength to overcome personal struggles.

This screening is an excellent opportunity for Agape Academy and the broader community to reflect on these important themes. Following the movie, a discussion panel will be held to engage with the youth about the lessons in the film and how they can apply them to their own lives.

Event Details:
- Date: January 6, 2025
- Time: 9am
- Location: Oikos Helping Hand Learning Center

Exciting PS4 Event: Detroit: Become Human – A Journey of Choices, Consequences, and Life Lessons

Hey everyone! 😊

We’re thrilled to announce an exciting event happening this week! This Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8 AM to 4 PM, we’re hosting a PS4 Event featuring the thought-provoking game Detroit: Become Human!✨

For those who are on Sem-Break, this is the perfect opportunity to have some fun while diving deep into a game that’s not just about entertainment but also about making choices that shape the future. As you play, you'll be faced with numerous dilemmas that test your decision-making skills, empathy, and understanding of complex social issues. It’s a game that challenges you to think critically, and we can’t wait to share this experience with you!

So, what can our scholars take away from this game? Here are some key life lessons to look out for while playing Detroit: Become Human:

1. The Power of Choices
One of the biggest takeaways from Detroit: Become Human, is the impact that every choice—big or small—can have on the world around you. Much like in real life, your decisions can lead to different outcomes, affecting not only your own life but the lives of others. This teaches players the importance of being mindful of their decisions and understanding that actions have consequences.

2. Empathy and Understanding
Throughout the game, you control androids who are fighting for their rights, but the story is told from multiple perspectives—human and android alike. This creates an opportunity to practice empathy, as players are encouraged to understand and relate to characters with different backgrounds and challenges. It’s a powerful reminder of the importance of seeing the world through others’ eyes, promoting compassion and understanding.

3. Responsibility and Accountability
Detroit: Become Human emphasizes the responsibility that comes with the ability to make choices. As you guide characters through difficult situations, you’ll learn that leadership and power come with the weight of accountability. Each choice can either advance or complicate the journey, teaching you to think critically and take ownership of your actions.

4. Moral Complexity and Ethical Dilemmas
Life isn’t always black and white, and the game brilliantly presents situations where the right choice isn’t clear-cut. Should you fight for freedom, even if it means risking the lives of others? Should you follow the law, even if it contradicts your moral beliefs? These types of questions invite players to grapple with moral ambiguity, helping to develop their own ethical compass.

5. Social Justice and Equality
A major theme in Detroit: Become Human is the fight for equality. The androids in the game struggle for recognition and rights, reflecting real-world social justice movements. As you navigate their journey, you’ll be challenged to think about issues of discrimination, prejudice, and equality—topics that remain relevant in our world today.

6. The Importance of Teamwork
While the game primarily focuses on individual decisions, there are moments when collaboration and working together with others is essential to overcoming obstacles. Whether you’re trying to build alliances or prevent conflicts, teamwork and communication become crucial in achieving goals, echoing the importance of cooperation in the real world.

7. Courage and Standing Up for What’s Right
Detroit: Become Human encourages players to stand up for what they believe in, even when the path forward is uncertain. Whether you’re challenging oppressive systems or taking a stand in difficult circumstances, the game teaches that courage isn’t about never being afraid—it’s about acting in the face of fear for a greater cause.

---

We hope this event will be more than just an opportunity to play; it’s a chance to learn, reflect, and grow. Whether you're a fan of action-packed games or just curious about the choices you’ll face, there’s something valuable for everyone in Detroit: Become Human.

Hope to see you all there this Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday! Let’s play, learn, and have an unforgettable time together! 😄

Oikos Business Mentoring Program

Oikos Helping Hand thru Agape Academy, in partnership with Investrong Business Mentoring Program, is a focused initiative designed to support the mothers of Oikos scholars in effectively growing and managing their microbusinesses. The program offers personalized mentorship in crucial areas for success, including business and legal compliance, soft skills development, and essential technical and digital competencies. By equipping participants with practical knowledge and hands-on skills, the program empowers parents to overcome business challenges, build sustainable enterprises, and strengthen their families' economic foundations.

The mentoring experience is structured with a combination of monthly group sessions and one-on-one coaching, providing focused guidance tailored to each participant's business growth.

At the beginning of the program, participants will be encouraged to develop a capstone project, which will serve as a comprehensive representation of their learning and progress throughout the 6-month program. This project will be monitored and guided through monthly coaching sessions, allowing participants to track their growth and apply what they've learned. The completed capstone project will be presented at the end of the program, showcasing the participants' development and accomplishments.

Women Empowerment in the Business Mentoring Program

The Business Mentoring Program launched on November 25, 2024, aligning with Republic Act 9262 (Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act), as part of the initiative to support women empowerment. This program will run for 6 months, aiming to raise awareness about Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC), advocating for gender equality, and empowering women to take active roles in their communities while promoting business success.

Violence against women and girls is a major global issue and a violation of human rights. The United Nations defines VAW as "any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion, or arbitrary deprivation of liberty."

In the Philippines, the National Demographic and Health Survey (2017) showed that 1 in 4 women, aged 15-49, experienced physical, emotional, or sexual violence from an intimate partner. The World Health Organization (WHO) also reports that about 35% of women globally have faced physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime. With these alarming statistics in mind, the Business Mentoring Program directly addresses the need for women's empowerment and protection, with a strong focus on promoting financial independence and legal rights for women.
