Psychologist Jholyan Francis Fornillos of the University of the Philippines-Los Baños Department of Social Science explained on August 18, 2026, that “No child is born violent,” emphasizing that several factors may influence a child to develop violent behavior.
Fornillos also warned the public to be careful when sharing sensitive information and posting content about school shooting incidents, citing the possible risk of copycat behavior.
“Ayung Ateneo de Zamboanga [incident] possibly naman na copycat behaviors lang din yan,” Fornillos said.
A study published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine described the “copycat effect” as a psychological phenomenon in which people may imitate the actions of others, particularly in cases involving crimes and violent acts.
Fornillos stressed that preventing similar incidents is not only the responsibility of schools and parents but also of the wider community.
