LPSci AP Club conducts historic 2-day LPSci Model UN Camp; diplomat, MUN veteran invited as guest lecturers
The LPSci Araling Panlipunan (AP) Club conducted the first-ever Las Pinas City National Science High School Model United Nations (MUN) Camp themed “Unity in Diversity: Building Better Bridges through Diplomacy” last November 27 to 28, 2025 in the school auditorium, inviting an actual diplomat, notable learners, an experienced faculty member, and a seasoned Model United Nations contestant to serve as the key guest lecturers of the two-day camp, with more than 30 student-delegates in attendance.
Opening the first day of the camp, Mrs. Ley Marie Delight L. Gavan, Teacher II and AP Department Coordinator, expressed her hope that the two-day focused learning session would pave the way for the AP Club to conduct an annual MUN event, in addition to multiple other simulated parliamentary sessions. Ms. Ruth G. Bonagua, Head Teacher II, invited the learners to participate wholeheartedly and open themselves to learning about the UN system and MUN. After the opening preliminaries, Santino Miguel A. Santos and Georgina Amber P. Gulpany, both long-time AP Club members, delivered a lecture on “Understanding the UN System” where both student lecturers explained the context behind the UN and its formation.
The guest speaker for the first camp day was Ms. Bertha Samponu, the Asia-Pacific Coordinator of the International Movement of Catholic Students Pax Romana, who delivered a lecture on “Youth and Diplomacy”. Ms. Samponu, an indigenous student leader, educator, and diplomat, has been sitting in actual United Nations Sessions delivering keynote speeches on behalf of her organization. She stressed the need for active youth participation in global diplomacy to find innovative and inclusive solutions for modern-day problems.
Ms. Samponu then gave a short workshop where learners formed cell learning groups, discussing key global issues, after which the learners acted as diplomats in a mock UN session, delivering their insights about the topic. Following a lunch break, Mr. Jiban A. Canangca-an, Teacher II of the school Senior High School Department delivered a lecture on Position Paper Writing, citing his previous experience as a MUN trainer. Mr. Canangca-an then gave a paired workshop on position paper writing, where learners, acting as diplomats of different countries, were given actual MUN topics—the issue being the conflict in the West Philippine Sea—and asked to write and deliver a short speech expressing the stance of their delegation on the topic. The first day then came to a close.
On the second day, Mr. Jhan Merson Y. Escaro, founder of the advocacy group The Advocates for Good in the Philippines (TAGPINAS) and seasoned Model United Nations (MUN) contestant delivered a keynote speech highlighting the styles and procedure of an actual MUN session. Mr. Escaro also gave tips and suggestions for each delegate to improve their performance before proceeding to conduct an actual simulated MUN session, following parliamentary rules of procedure. The mock MUN session focused on the topic of ‘Indigenous Peoples and Other Minorities’ where learner-delegates formed different blocs and debated key issues as mock ambassadors of their assigned countries.
Following a lunch break and the departure of the guest speaker, Santino Miguel Santos, Georgina Amber Gulpany, and Lance Neo Esliza acted as the Board of Dais—taking on the role of Chairperson, Co-Chairperson, and Rapporteur in a simulated session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) focusing on the topic of ‘Addressing Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking,’ with Mr. Jiban A. Canangca-an serving as the main judge for the awards of Best Delegate, Best Resolution, and Best Position Paper. In the three-hour session, learner-delegates produced two draft resolution, one of which passed the voting threshold and was adopted by the simulated Council. Succeeding the adjournment of the mock council, Shanelle Ann Margaret T. Dimaano delivered a short insight about her learnings in the two-day camp.
The awarding ceremony for outstanding delegates then ensued, led by Georgina Amber P. Gulpany, Program Management Team (Student Wing) Focal Person, Mrs. Gavan, Mrs. Zonia P. Nirza, Master Teacher II, Ms. Rowena S. Ross, Teacher I, and Mr. Jiban A. Canangca-an, with the closing remarks being delivered by Mrs. Zonia P. Nirza.
