In this passage, God promised Abram that his heir will be from his own body. God didn't mention to whom it will be planted until afer several chapters later. Thus, the reason Abram and Sara thought of ways to fulfill that promise with their own mind and their own understanding. They thought, they understood what God had in mind. Is it God's fault then that they made a mistake? Definitely NOT!
Many times we do this. God give us a promise and we hold on to it, but we rush and started leading God on how to fulfill that promise instead of letting God fulfill that promise however He sees fit. Therefore made life difficult than it already is.
This reminds me of a verse in the Bible when God says "My thoughts are not your thoughts nor are my ways your ways" but despite not fully understanding what God plans, we can always trust that His plans are good.
Prayer: LORD, I'm sorry for being impatient with you. I might not be able to correct the mistakes I did, but I still hold on to Your promise. Thank You for your never ending Faithfulness in my life even when I failed to be true. Show me how to be more and more like You.
