1 Kings 12:1โ16
Solomon left Rehoboam something every son would desire: a throne, a kingdom, and a name already established.
But Rehoboam inherited something else - ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐จ๐๐ค๐ฃ
When Solomon died, the people came to Rehoboam with a simple request:
โThy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.โ ( 1 Kings 12:4 KJV )
Rehoboam asked the elders who had served Solomon. Their counsel was simple: serve the people, speak kindly, and they would remain loyal.
But Rehoboam rejected their wisdom.
Instead, he listened to the young men who had grown up with him. Their advice was not to lighten the burden, but to make it heavier.
โAnd the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer this people...โ ( 1 Kings 12:10, KJV )
Then Rehoboam gave his answer.

โSo the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the LORD...โ ( 1 KINGS 12:15 KJV )
Ten tribes followed Jeroboam, while only Judah and Benjamin remained with Rehoboam.
A kingdom that Solomon had spent years building was divided under his son's leadership.
The tragedy is that Rehoboam did not lose the kingdom because he lacked an inheritance.
He lost much of it because he lacked wisdom.

Rehoboam's greatest mistake was not that he asked for advice.
It was that he ejected wise counsel because foolish counsel told him what his pride wanted to hear.
The consequences continued.
Years later, Shishak king of Egypt came against Jerusalem and took the treasures of the house of the LORD and the king's houseโincluding Solomon's shields of gold (1 Kings 14:25โ26). Rehoboam eventually died, and his son Abijam succeeded him.
The kingdom survived, but the united kingdom did not.
One proud decision became a permanent division.
Rehoboam's story reminds us that leadership is not proven by how firmly we can command people, but by how humbly we can receive wisdom.
Before making a decision that affects others, ask:
Am I seeking wisdom, or simply looking for someone who will agree with me?
