"He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 'The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.โ€ (Luke 24:6-7)

โ€œ๐‚๐ก๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ž๐ง!โ€

This Paschal greeting holds symbolic significance for many Christians as it signifies that Jesus has become triumphant in his conquest over death and sin, and has risen from the dead on the third day. Easter Sunday gives us the message of hope and renewal - that amidst all of our trials and tribulations, there is still hope on the horizon for our lives to be renewed. There is hope in the resurrection of Christ, offering us eternal life and salvation.

Despite the message Jesusโ€™ resurrection gives us, it can be difficult to believe that hope lives on, given the current circumstances. The oil & energy crisis amidst the specter of war & destruction in Iran and Lebanon has exacerbated the already-worsening daily situation of the common people, especially for drivers and workers in the transport sector. Similar to what Christ endured, many people who are simply in defense of human rights, social justice and peace are persecuted and branded as โ€œenemies of the stateโ€ by people whose minds make ego and greed prevail over the common good. Continuing corruption within the government is aggravating the situation of the common Filipino who can barely afford to make ends meet. Our problems seem endless, with no solution or a glimmer of hope in sight.

Amidst all of this, we are still encouraged to become bearers of hope not only for ourselves but also for the people around us and the wider community. Hope shines through, in the simple acts of kindness and service we render to the least of our brothers and sisters - the anawim.

When we give what we can to those in need โ€“ a hand up for the struggling transport workers, food and shelter to the unhoused, socio-legal aid for those in need of defenders to their cause, companionship for those in need of guidance amidst their grief and pain, opportunities for the differently-abled to serve their brothers and sisters in Christ โ€“ we serve as beacons of hope and shine a light to the rest of the world. This light of hope, brightening the lives of the anawim, dispels the dismal darkness of our current circumstances, and reinforces the faith in the message of Christโ€™s resurrection: so long as Jesus lives in our hearts, hope lives in the world.

Christโ€™s death on the cross redeemed us from our societyโ€™s vicious past. And despite our societyโ€™s foolish return to the vices from which His death redeemed us, Christโ€™s resurrection lifts us onward and upward to a future of hope, peace and justice for us all.

As we continue to journey with the anawim, we also continue to be inspired by the message that Christโ€™s resurrection wishes to convey to us โ€“ hope is not lost. As we hold the faith in the risen Christ within us, we continue to give the light of hope to the least of our brothers and sisters.

โ€œNow that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one anotherโ€™s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.โ€ (John 13:14-15)
โ€œAnd he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, โ€œThis is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, โ€œThis cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you โ€ (Luke 22:19-20)

Maundy Thursday is a significant event in the Christian calendar as it commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with His Apostles, and a day where he demonstrated His love and service through the symbolic act of washing the feet. Many Christians choose to commemorate this through tradition - Visita Iglesia, pabasa, and most especially the washing of feet.

However, it is indeed getting more difficult to follow our traditions in the midst of crises such as the ongoing oil crisis amid the backdrop of war that worsens even further the living conditions of the common Filipino. With sky-rocketing crude oil prices, generation of sufficient energy and the movement of goods are affected. This is further aggravated by corruption and the culture of impunity that has since prevailed, allowing those in power to walk away from accountability. With corruption, basic services are degraded, and the people are forced to wait for another round of ayuda that are obviously not enough to get by even for a week. This ayuda, a band-aid solution to every crisis, creates an illusion that the government is doing something relevant.

Meanwhile, some people choose to be detached from the situation to shield themselves from the suffering by displaying how โ€œbountifulโ€ their โ€œblessingsโ€ are in their own supper table. Wealth, sufficiency, and plenty are being displayed right in front of our eyes, as if we arenโ€™t all entitled to these - and these are credited to the โ€œLordโ€™s workโ€.

All of these begs the question: who is truly invited to the Lordโ€™s table? Is it the rich who managed to fuel their vehicles and stockpiled on their goods in time for the ongoing energy crisis? Is it those who managed to provide more than enough for themselves? Or, are the common people - drivers, laborers, workers, students, and everyone else in between - also invited to the table?

Amid the current hardships, we are encouraged to invite others to our table of plenty, just as Jesus would invite all of us to the table. Even as Filipinos are encouraged to invoke the spirit of bayanihan in these challenging times, we are still invited to a greater invocation of a much more meaningful collective action towards uplifting lives. Through supporting community drives, advocating for pro-people policies such as lifting the excise tax on fuel products and speaking for the people most afflicted by the energy crisis such as transport workers and laborers, we make sure that everyone gets a share of their fill in the table filled with bountiful blessings.

Let us also be enlightened and empowered by Jesusโ€™ symbolic act of washing His disciplesโ€™ feet: an act of selfless servitude and leadership. Where leaders intentionally neglect their sworn duties to serve, is where we, the people, rise against all odds. We, as Godโ€™s people, especially the youth, have the power to speak out against injustices, just as how Christ spoke out against the Pharisees. We can lead the community in our own ways during this crisis, as young as we are.

As Pride Month comes to a close, we take a moment to give thanks and celebrate the success of NLJ CYFโ€™s
โ€œTIGNAY AGTUTUBO: Breaking Barriers, Rebuilding Communitiesโ€
An Online Discussion on HIV-AIDS and Gender Justice.

This event was more than just a webinar. It was a bold step forward in breaking the silence, confronting stigma, and championing the rights and dignity of all โ€” especially the youth and LGBTQIA+ community within our faith-based spaces.

On behalf of the NLJ CYF Executive Committee, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our insightful Speakers and Reactors who generously shared their expertise, personal stories, and calls to action. Your voices brought light, depth, and courage to the conversation.

To all participants who took the time to join us โ€” thank you. Your presence and engagement are powerful reminders that there is a growing movement among young people and church communities who are ready to listen, learn, and lead.

We pray and hope that this conversation is only the beginning โ€” that it will ignite meaningful action in upcoming Conferences, and Local Church initiatives. May we continue to build safe, affirming spaces where young people, church workers, and lay leaders can thrive, speak truth, and advocate for inclusive, rights-based, and gender-just ministries.

Let us be reminded: True faith does not exclude โ€” it embraces, uplifts, and empowers.

Tignay Agututubo!
