🩺 How to Take Vital Signs in Children

✅ General Tips:
- Calm the child before the assessment
- Use toys, videos, or explain equipment gently
- If distressed, wait and try again later

🌡️ Temperature
- Most accurate: Re**al (for infants)
- Axillary: Common and safe
- Oral: For older children who can hold a thermometer under their tongue
- Tympanic / Temporal artery: Quick & less distressing

❤️ Pulse
- Infants: Use brachial or apical pulse
- Older children: Radial pulse is fine
- Count for a full minute (HR may be irregular)

🌬️ Respiration
- Count silently without alerting the child
- Watch chest or abdominal movement
- Count for one full minute

🩸 Blood Pressure
- Use proper cuff size (width ≈ 40% of arm circumference)
- Check last, as it can stress the child
- If upset, leave the cuff on and retry when calm

💨 Oxygen Saturation (SpO₂)
- Use a child-sized pulse oximeter
- Ensure the sensor is properly placed

😢 Pain Assessment
- Use age-appropriate pain scales
- Young children: FACES Pain Scale
- Older kids: Numerical or descriptive scales
