The Cordillera Regional Health Research and Development Consortium (CRHRDC) proudly congratulates the research team from the University of the Philippines Baguio for receiving support under the 2026 DOST-PCHRD Undergraduate Thesis Grant in Natural Products (First Call).

Their funded study, “Phytochemical Profiling and In Vivo Neuroprotective Evaluation of Dillenia philippinensis Leaf Extract in Caenorhabditis elegans,” is led by student researchers Sophia Rhys Q. Bañados, Stephanie U. Buenconsejo, and Jherome G. Pangilinan, under the guidance of Dr. Ailyn Fadriquela and Dr. Roland Hipol.

This achievement reflects the growing contribution of young researchers in the Cordillera to natural products research and health innovation. May this grant open more opportunities for meaningful discoveries and inspire more students to pursue research that responds to health needs and advances scientific knowledge.

The Cordillera Regional Health Research and Development Consortium (CRHRDC) successfully conducted Phase I of the Basic Research Methods (BRM) Course on September 9–11, 2026, at Orchard Hotel, Legarda Road, Baguio City.

The activity forms part of the Capacity Building Committee’s (CBC) mandate to build the capacity of novice health researchers in the Cordillera by strengthening their knowledge and skills in health research and guiding them in developing high-quality research proposals for potential funding.

During the course opening, Ms. Maria Rowena C. Madarang, Consortium Director, emphasized the primary goal of the training—to equip participants with the competencies needed to craft detailed research proposals ready for potential funding through the CRHRDC Regional Research Funding Mechanism.

The three-day course went beyond lectures. Participants took part in interactive workshops, proposal crafting, mentoring sessions, and capsule proposal presentations, allowing them to apply the concepts and methods learned to their proposed health research studies. A total of 13 capsule proposals were presented, reflecting the participants’ initial research ideas and their commitment to addressing health concerns in the Cordillera.

The CRHRDC, through the CBC, continues to foster a culture of research capacity building—supporting researchers from the foundational stages of research conceptualization toward the development of meaningful, relevant, and fundable health research.

📌 𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐈𝐈 will take place on 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟕–𝟐𝟗, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐨 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲, where participants will further develop and finalize their detailed research proposals for possible funding through the CRHRDC Regional Research Funding Mechanism.

𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊!

The Cordillera Regional Health Research and Development Consortium (CRHRDC) provided technical assistance to the Institutional Writing for Publication Workshop requested by Benguet General Hospital (BeGH) on July 23–25, 2025.

The three-day workshop brought together Surgery residents and health researchers from different member institutions in the North Luzon Cluster of the Philippine Society of General Surgeons – Northern Luzon Chapter. It focused on helping participants transform their research into manuscripts ready for journal publication.

Topics included the importance and opportunities of writing for publication; principles of scientific writing; the IMRAD format; writing style and research ethics; journal selection and submission; manuscript drafting and revision; bridging clinical practice and scientific writing; and responding to peer reviewers. Participants were also introduced to the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in health research and scholarly publication.

The sessions were facilitated by CRHRDC resource speakers and mentors, Dr. Erlinda C. Palaganas, Dr. Mark Preston Lopez, Dr. Marilou S. Saong, Dr. Allan Jay Espiritu, Dr. Jude L. Tayaben, Ms. Lilian G. Tumapang, Dr. Sheila Marie Esther S. Villanueva, Dr. Thelma D. Palaoag, and Dr. Nelson A. Hora.

One of the highlights was the presentation of Dr. Jann Aaron Acuna, whose research manuscript was already ready for journal submission, with only minimal comments and recommendations from the resource speakers. His progress showed how focused mentoring and technical guidance can help researchers take their work closer to publication.

In her closing remarks, Ms. Maria Rowena C. Madarang, CRHRDC Consortium Director, emphasized the importance of publishing research upon completion. She noted that research should not simply remain “stuck on shelves,” but should be shared and utilized by the intended beneficiaries of health research.

The CRHRDC commends Benguet General Hospital, the Philippine Society of General Surgeons – Northern Luzon Chapter, and the participating institutions for their commitment to strengthening research and publication among health professionals.

Through initiatives like this, the CRHRDC continues to support a culture where research is not only conducted but also published, shared, and translated into meaningful impact for better health.

The Cordillera delegation proudly earned two national awards during the 19th PNHRS Week competitions:

🥉3rd Place – Ms. Zwiesel Cantuba of Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center, 3-Minute Pitch to Policymakers Competition

CRHRDC salutes Ms. Co and Dr. Cantuba for bringing pride and honor to the region on the national stage.

CRHRDC likewise recognizes Dr. Steivy U. Tiwaken of Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center, finalist in the Scientific Poster Presentation – Professional Category, and Ms. Rica Loreine C. Borbon of the University of the Cordilleras, finalist in the Consortium Poster Competition.

Only six finalists were selected from as many as 16 entries in their respective competitions, placing them among the strongest entries presented nationwide. Their recognition demonstrates the growing strength and competitiveness of Cordillera health research.

More than the awards and rankings, the participation of the four finalists highlights the ability of Cordillera researchers and institutions to bring local knowledge, community realities, and innovative ideas into the national health research conversation.

𝐔𝐒𝐀𝐏𝐀𝐍𝐆 𝐒𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐒𝐈𝐊 𝐏𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐊𝐀𝐋𝐔𝐒𝐔𝐆𝐀𝐍 | CRHRDC Joins the 19th PNHRS Week, Bringing CAR Health Research to the National Stage

The Cordillera Regional Health Research and Development Consortium (CRHRDC) joined health researchers and advocates from across the country at the 19th Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Week Celebration held at Carpenter Hill, Koronadal City, South Cotabato.

Carrying the theme “HEALTHCONVERGE: Transforming Health Research, Connecting Cultures,” this year’s celebration brought together the 17 Regional Health Research and Development Consortia for plenary sessions, meetings, knowledge-sharing activities, and national research competitions. The gathering highlighted how research, culture, science, and collaboration can work together to address the changing health needs of Filipino communities.

The celebration officially opened with messages from Engr. Sammy P. Malawan, Regional Director of DOST XII and Chair of HRDC XII, and South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo. The national PNHRS report was presented by DOST Undersecretary Leah J. Buendia, followed by messages from key partner institutions, including CHED, UP Manila, and the Department of Health. DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr. delivered the keynote address.

The plenary sessions presented diverse perspectives on health and culture, including discussions of genomics and forensics, traditional and complementary medicine, policy integration, nursology, caring science, and health anthropology. These conversations emphasized that meaningful health research must not only be scientifically sound but also responsive to the identities, traditions, and realities of the communities it serves.

Representing the Cordillera Administrative Region were DOST-CAR Regional Director, Dr. Nancy A. Bantog and CRHRDC Consortium Director, Maria Rowena C. Madarang, together with the CRHRDC delegation.

CRHRDC also proudly fielded representatives in various national competitions during the celebration:
