When a platypus dives underwater to hunt, it tightly closes its eyes, ears, and nostrils, rendering it completely blind and deaf. Instead, it relies on its rubbery bill, which is packed with thousands of receptors that detect the tiny electrical currents generated by the muscles of moving prey. By sweeping its head from side to side, it allows to perfectly locate and snap up food in pitch-black, muddy water.
