#𝐆𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐔𝐏! 𝐁𝐒𝐔-𝐒𝐒𝐆 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐁𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐝𝐚𝐲.

STUDENTS DESERVE BETTER, WE DESERVE BETTER! This was the loudest call from the 13th Baguio Students Day last September 13, 2026 at the University of the Philippines - Baguio.

More than 600 student leaders from 22 schools in Baguio and La Trinidad packed the 𝐆𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐔𝐩 𝟐.𝟎 summit not just to attend workshops, such as public speaking, organizational management, financial literacy, etc. But to demand change. Together, they launched the 2026 "𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫" a student-made plan that is simple but long overdue, safer schools, funds that students can actually use, honest updates on where school buildings and budgets go, and faster approval of student activities.

The said event was organized by NUSP-Cordillera and the Cordilleran Youth Center in partnership with various student organizations, youth network, and institutions. Students, does these questions ring a bell: How many events were delayed for two months just to get a signature? How many classrooms still have broken chairs, leaking roofs, and weak Wi-Fi? How many times were students left out of the planning? well, these are just some things that the said event has tackled.

If schools truly serve the students, then students must have a real seat at the table.

Baguio-Benguet youth are not just future leaders. We are leaders now and we deserve better.

𝐁𝐒𝐔-𝐋𝐓 𝐒𝐒𝐆 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐊 𝐏𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝟐 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧.

Organized by the Sangguniang Kabataan Council of Barangay Poblacion in partnership with the Benguet State University Supreme Student Government, the consecutive weekend gatherings held at FOCUS Cafe brought together students and individuals from various institutions to tackle the interconnected issues of mental health, gender identity, and community safety.

The initiative opened on September 5, 2026, with Pannemneman 2026: Creating Safe Spaces, Understanding Minds, Nurturing Lives, a seminar dedicated to emotional resilience and personal health. Speakers from this event emphasized the importance of recognizing signs of distress in peers and learning how to offer meaningful support, and encouraging attendees to serve as empathetic safe spaces for one another while reflecting on their own personal journeys.

The momentum continued on September 12 with KADWA: Understanding Gender, Embracing Identity, Building Inclusive Communities, organized alongside the BSU College of Information Sciences Student Government and Bahaghari Metro Baguio. The Gender and Development program examined human rights frameworks through educational sessions on SOGIE, Violence Against Women, and anti-sexual harassment laws. A multi-sectoral panel of student, education, and LGBTQIA+ leaders shared strategies for dismantling discrimination, culminating in an open forum and the formal signing of the KADWA Manifesto to solidify the community's pledge against gender-based violence.

By pairing personal mental health care with active social inclusion, these collaborative efforts demonstrate a proactive approach to youth empowerment in Benguet.

MARTIAL LAW COMMEMORATION - Progressive groups and civil society organizations gathered at the Baguio People’s Center on September 5 to plan activities against corruption and prepare for the 54th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law.

Carrying the battle cry “NEVER AGAIN! NEVER FORGET!” organizers said the protest highlights the historical memory of Martial Law and raise concerns over what they describe as continuing violence and impunity in governance.

The network also planned information drives, public forums and other protest activities across Baguio and Benguet.

On this date in 1972, then-President Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr. signed 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐍𝐨. 𝟏𝟎𝟖𝟏, 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐚𝐰. The period that followed remains an important part of our national history, marked by documented cases of human rights violations, including arbitrary arrests and detention, torture, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings.

We also remember the experiences of communities in the Cordillera during this period. Development projects such as the 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐨 𝐑𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞-𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 placed ancestral lands and Indigenous communities under significant pressure. The resistance of Cordilleran communities, including the leadership of Macli-ing Dulag, remains an important part of the region's history and its continuing tradition of protecting ancestral domain and community welfare.

As students and members of an academic community, remembering carries a responsibility. Wearing black is a simple gesture, but it can carry a meaningful message. It allows us to collectively remember, reflect, and acknowledge a significant chapter in our nation's history. More than a color, it can serve as a visible expression of our commitment to keeping historical memory alive within our university community.

We encourage every BSUian who wishes to take part to 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟏 and join us in remembering.

MORE THAN 600 STUDENT LEADERS GATHER FOR BAGUIO STUDENTS DAY 2026 🚀

A huge success marked the Baguio Students Day (BSD) 2026: Gear Up 2.0 at the University of the Philippines Baguio on September 13, 2026. The event was attended by more than 600 student leaders representing 22 secondary and tertiary schools across Baguio City and La Trinidad, Benguet.

Organized by the Cordilleran Youth Center (C*C) in partnership with the City Government of Baguio, SIGLAT Youth Innovation Hub, and other youth and student organizations in Metro Baguio, the 13th edition of Baguio Students Day featured the second installment of "Gear Up!", offering a packed schedule of plenary discussions and skills training sessions.

"Gear Up 2.0 was designed to better equip our student leaders with practical skills, including public speaking, organizational management, financial literacy, advocacy, and policy reform, among others," said Miel Taggaoa of the Cordilleran Youth Center, co-head of BSD 2026. Esteemed speakers for each workshop included experts in their respective fields.

Taggaoa warmly shared that the energy from the participants showed "a strong drive among Baguio youth to translate leadership into tangible action within their campuses and communities."

BSD 2026 was framed around the continuing campaign "Students Deserve Better, Filipinos Deserve Better," launched last BSD 2025. Led by the National Union of Students of the Philippines-Cordillera (NUSP-Cordillera), this year's event highlighted the "2026 Pathway to Better," which outlines the immediate collective demands of students across Metro Baguio.

NUSP-Cordillera Spokesperson Eugene Enciso elaborated that the SDB 2026 Pathway was a product of a series of consultations among student councils and youth organizations in Metro Baguio. According to Enciso, key press points of the campaign include: safe and inclusive spaces in schools; accessible funding for student organizations and institutions; transparency in school construction, facilities, and school development plans; and the streamlining of processes for student activities.

The BSD 2026 gathering also served as the official launch of the search for the Safe and Sound Baguio Ambassadors. It is an open call for Baguio youth aged 15–30 from September to October 2026. Applicants and the 10 selected cohorts will be trained and supported to lead youth-driven campaigns and activities aimed at contributing to safer, more inclusive urban environments. # # #
