From learning the basics to living them out, the 3-day Nutri Camp turned learning into a full-on celebration of health and happiness!

Over the course of three vibrant days, participants dove into an engaging mix of educational and recreational activities that brought nutrition concepts to life. From energetic Zumba sessions and creative role plays to colorful banner and flag making in celebration of Womenโ€™s Month, every moment was filled with enthusiasm, teamwork, and purpose.

Beyond the fun, the camp strengthened understanding of essential food and nutrition principles. Learners explored food psychology and built a strong foundation on basic concepts such as Go, Grow, and Glow foods, the Food Pyramid, and Pinggang Pinoy, empowering them to make healthier, more mindful choices every day.

The experience proved that nutrition education goes far beyond the classroom, it can be active, expressive, and deeply meaningful. By blending knowledge with creativity and movement, the Nutri Camp not only informed but inspired lasting healthy habits and a deeper appreciation for overall well-being.

Across the discussion, the speakers collectively emphasized that the profession is not a straightforward path, but one that is shaped by continuous learning, adjustment, and personal growth. Their experiences highlighted that competence in Nutrition and Dietetics is not only built in the classroom, but is refined through real-life practice, where unexpected situations often become the most meaningful lessons.

In the field of foodservice, ๐Œ๐ฌ. ๐๐ฎ๐ข๐ซ๐ข๐ญ shared her role as a Quality Assurance Officer of Valley Bread Inc., where ensuring quality tracking systems and food safety standards is essential. She reflected on her early experience as a rookie when she confidently overlooked water quality considerations, only to realize later that even small details can significantly affect overall food safety and production. This experience became a valuable lesson in vigilance, humility, and the importance of always verifying assumptions in practice.

๐Œ๐ฌ. ๐ƒ๐š๐ ๐ฒ๐š๐ฉ, on the field of clinical nutrition, reflected on her early clinical experience, where she once confidently designed a diet plan but overlooked a key detail in a patientโ€™s condition. Despite initially including high-potassium foods such as broccoli for a patient, she learned to immediately reassess, conduct further research, and adjust her recommendations accordingly. Her experience highlighted the importance of critical thinking, continuous learning, and evidence-based decision-making in patient care.

Meanwhile, ๐Œ๐ฌ. ๐๐ฎ๐ ๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐  shared her experiences in public health, provided insights into the differences between government and non-government organization settings. She explained that government processes often involve longer protocols and require personal submission of documents, while NGOs allow faster communication and program implementation through digital platforms and coordinated reporting systems. She also highlighted the importance of building strong connections from regional to barangay levels and the need for effective communication, cultural sensitivity, and adaptability when working with diverse communities. She stressed that professionals should not position themselves above the community but rather learn to meet people where they are.

In the field of academe, ๐Œ๐ฌ. ๐๐š๐œ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐  shared her journey from clinical practice to public health and eventually to teaching. She reflected on how her path evolved over time, including a period where she focused on family life and managing a small coffee business in Buguias, Benguet. Her experience showed that career paths are not fixed and that growth often comes through exploration, openness, and alignment with purpose. She emphasized the importance of being confident even in uncertainty, being true to oneself, and remaining humble while pursuing different opportunities guided by faith and passion.

Across all the shared experiences, a unifying theme emerged:๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ, ๐˜ฉ๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜บ, ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ถ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜•๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜‹๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ด. The speakers collectively highlighted that mistakes and challenges, whether in clinical decisions, foodservice operations, public health systems, or career transitions, are not failures, but essential parts of professional growth.

The session concluded with an open forum from BS Nutrition and Dietetics students, allowing further engagement with the resource speakers. Certificates and tokens of appreciation were then awarded, followed by photo documentation to formally close the event.

Ultimately, the vent served as a meaningful reminder that the journey in Nutrition and Dietetics is shaped not only by knowledge and skills, but also by experiences, reflection, and purpose. Above all, the speakers emphasized one shared foundation:

Meet Maโ€™am Shanerisse Tamondong, RND โ€” a dedicated nutrition professional and youth advocate whose journey is rooted in service, compassion, and leadership. ๐ŸŒฑ

Long before becoming a registered nutritionist-dietitian, Maโ€™am Shanerisse was already serving communities as a young volunteer. Growing up in Pangasinan, she joined outreach programs that reached distant and often underserved barangays. It was in these moments that she encountered the realities of hunger and neglect among childrenโ€”experiences that shaped her purpose and strengthened her resolve to pursue a path in nutrition and public service.

Today, she serves as a Project Associate for Food Security and Nutrition at the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR), where she supports programs alongside agriculturists and nutritionists to improve community well-being. Her work focuses on implementing nutrition-sensitive initiatives, strengthening food systems, and engaging the youth in meaningful advocacy efforts.

Beyond her professional role, Maโ€™am Shanerisse is recognized for her strong leadership backgroundโ€”from her involvement in PAN-BZC to serving as a student leader. She believes that leadership is not just about occupying a space, but about giving justice to the opportunity to speak, act, and serve. For her, being a leader means being reliable, consultative, and grounded in the realities of the communities she represents.

Her insights from the field highlight an important truth: while the Philippines has many well-intentioned programs and policies, gaps and disconnects still exist. Through her work in the NGO sector, she helps bridge these gapsโ€”complementing government efforts while also advocating for accountability and inclusive development.

Her message to aspiring nutritionists and students is both a challenge and a call to action:

Donโ€™t just aim to passโ€”prepare to serve.
Maximize your time now, because what you build in this season will determine the kind of professionalโ€”and personโ€”you become in the future. Learn beyond the classroom. Absorb knowledge from your mentors, your peers, and the communities around you.

Because one day, you wonโ€™t just be applying theoriesโ€”you will be facing real people, real struggles, and real lives depending on what you know and how deeply you care.

So build yourself fully: in knowledge, in skill, in compassion, and in purpose. Even if it feels overwhelming now, rememberโ€”there is a greater need waiting beyond these walls. And when that time comes, make sure you are ready to respond.

Her story is a testament that true service goes beyond professionโ€”it is a lifelong commitment to making a difference. ๐Ÿ’š
