Every 12th day of June, we remember the moment the Philippines declared itself free. We celebrate the courage of those who imagined a nation that could govern itself, determine its own future, and stand on its own feet.
But more than a century later, perhaps the question is no longer whether we are independent.
Is it freedom when many Filipinos work tirelessly yet still struggle to make ends meet? When misinformation spreads faster than facts? When frustration turns into apathy, and participation feels pointless?
And perhaps one of our greatest challenges today is not a foreign power, but our growing inability to see one another as fellow Filipinos. We live in a time when disagreements quickly become divisions, when political labels matter more than conversations, and when it becomes easier to dismiss than to listen and understand.
And that is why Independence Day still matters.
Not because freedom is something our heroes won once and for all, but because every generation must decide what to do with the freedom it inherits.
As we raise our flags today, may we also pause and ask ourselves:
A nationโs freedom is measured not only by its independence, but by the willingness of its people to confront challenges, safeguard democracy, and work toward a better future.
Because perhaps the greatest threat to freedom isn't disagreement or criticism. It's indifference.
