What if the first casualty of a silenced democracy is not the journalist, but the public? The humiliation of the press is therefore more than an attack on a profession. It is an attempt to make society ashamed of its own curiosity.
Because a journalist does something deceptively simple: they remember. They preserve the details that power would prefer to blur, place questions where convenient answers should be, and give names to realities that might otherwise disappear into statistics, statements, and carefully chosen words. From the correspondent standing in the middle of a crisis to the student holding a campus paper, journalism begins with the same refusal: to look away merely because looking is easier.
Journalism is not the art of making everyone agree. Sometimes, it is the discipline of making people look again.
A headline can fade. A newspaper can be yellow. A byline can be forgotten. But once something has been witnessed, written, and placed into public memory, it becomes harder to erase.
So today, we do not merely celebrate the freedom to write. We defend the people who continue to write when writing becomes dangerous, inconvenient, or unwelcomed.
Long live the professional journalists who stand where truth is hardest to tell.
Long live the student journalists who are still learning how to carry that truth.
Long live every reporter, writer, photographer, editor, and storyteller who refuses to let silence become the official version of history.
