🌹 FEAST OF THE NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY🕊️
What Does the Catholic Church Teach About the Birth of Mary?
“Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you.”
— Luke 1:28
🌹 As we enter the beautiful month of September, we look forward to celebrating the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8, as one of the most beautiful Marian feasts.
But an important question arises:
❓ How do we know that Mary was born on September 8?
❓ Does the Bible tell us the date of Mary's birth?
❓ Who were Mary's parents?
❓ What does the Church actually teach—and what belongs to ancient Christian tradition?
Let us examine this carefully, without confusing Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and pious tradition.
📖 1. DOES THE BIBLE GIVE THE DATE OF MARY'S BIRTH?
No.
The Bible does not tell us the date of Mary's birth, nor does it give us an account of her infancy.
The Gospels introduce Mary when she is already a young woman, at the Annunciation:
“Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you.”
— Luke 1:28
The Gospel tells us much about Mary's role in salvation history: her Annunciation, her Visitation to Elizabeth, the birth of Jesus, her presence at Cana, her presence at the Cross, and her prayer with the Apostles.
But her birthday is not recorded.
This should not trouble a Catholic.
The Bible itself does not claim to record every detail of the lives of the people it mentions.
🌿 2. THEN WHY DOES THE CHURCH CELEBRATE SEPTEMBER 8?
🌹 The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is an ancient Christian feast, celebrated in the East from at least the sixth century and later introduced into Rome. The feast eventually became established throughout the Western Church.
The September 8 date is therefore a liturgical tradition of the Church, not a date that Catholics claim to have discovered explicitly in Scripture.
And there is an important historical point:
📌 The September 8 feast of Mary's Nativity existed before the December 8 Western feast of the Immaculate Conception.
Therefore, it would be more accurate to say:
December 8 was placed nine months before September 8, rather than claiming that the Church first discovered Mary's birthday from the Immaculate Conception.
The relationship between the two feasts is nevertheless beautiful:

🌸 September 8 — Mary's Nativity 🌹
The Church celebrates both mysteries of Mary's beginning with profound joy.
👨👩👧 3. WHO WERE MARY'S PARENTS?
The names traditionally given to Mary's parents are:
👨 Saint Joachim
👩 Saint Anne
However, we must make an important distinction.
The canonical Gospels do not name Mary's parents.
The names Joachim and Anne come from an ancient Christian writing known as the Protoevangelium of James, traditionally dated to the second century. It tells a story about Mary's parents, their longing for a child, Mary's birth, and her early life.
But the Church does not treat this apocryphal writing as inspired Scripture.
Therefore, Catholics should not say:
❌ “The Bible says Mary's parents were Joachim and Anne.”
Rather:
✅ “Ancient Christian tradition identifies Mary's parents as Joachim and Anne.”
This is an important distinction in Catholic apologetics.
✨ 4. DOES THE CHURCH TEACH THAT MARY WAS IMMACULATELY CONCEIVED?
Yes. Absolutely.
But here is another point that is frequently misunderstood:
⚠️ The Immaculate Conception is NOT the conception of Jesus.
The Immaculate Conception refers to Mary's own conception in the womb of her mother.
The Church teaches that from the first moment of her conception, Mary was preserved by God's grace from original sin, through the merits of Jesus Christ.
Pope Pius IX solemnly defined this doctrine in 1854:
Mary was preserved from all stain of original sin “by a singular grace and privilege of Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ.”
So:
👶 Mary's conception → Immaculate Conception
👶 Jesus' conception in Mary's womb → Incarnation, by the power of the Holy Spirit
These are two completely different mysteries.
🕊️ 5. WHY WOULD GOD PRESERVE MARY FROM ORIGINAL SIN?
Because Mary's entire vocation was ordered toward Jesus Christ. 🕊️
The Catholic teaching about Mary is never independent of Christ.

The Catechism explains:
“What the Catholic faith believes about Mary is based on what it believes about Christ.”
— CCC 487
God prepared Mary to become the Mother of His Son.
At the Annunciation, the angel declares:
“Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you.”
— Luke 1:28
And Mary responds:
“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”
— Luke 1:38
Mary's greatness is therefore not that she replaces Jesus.
Her greatness is that God prepared her to receive Jesus and freely cooperated with His plan.
🌅 6. WHY IS MARY'S BIRTH IMPORTANT?
Because Mary's birth belongs to the preparation for the Incarnation.
Her birth points forward to another birth:
🌹 Mary is born
⬇️
🌹 Mary becomes the Mother of the Messiah
⬇️
✝️ Christ is born
⬇️
✝️ Christ accomplishes our salvation
Mary's Nativity is therefore not merely a celebration of someone's birthday.
It is a celebration of God's providence in preparing the Mother of the Savior.
The Church has traditionally celebrated the earthly births of only three persons in its liturgical calendar:
✝️ Jesus
🌹 Mary
🕊️ John the Baptist
Their births have a special place because each is intimately connected with God's plan of salvation.
📜 7. WHAT ABOUT THE STORY OF JOACHIM AND ANNE?
The ancient Protoevangelium of James describes Joachim and Anne as childless and deeply longing for a child. It presents Mary's birth as an extraordinary blessing from God.
But Catholics must be careful here.
📌 The Protoevangelium of James is not part of the Bible.
📌 It is not inspired Scripture.
📌 Its details about Mary's infancy should not automatically be treated as historical fact.
Nevertheless, ancient Christian writings can help us understand how early Christians expressed their devotion to Mary and reflected upon her place in God's plan.
So Catholic apologetics should distinguish:
Sacred Scripture → inspired Word of God
Sacred Tradition → apostolic faith handed on in the Church
Ancient pious traditions/apocryphal writings → valuable historical witnesses to Christian devotion, but not equal to Scripture or defined doctrine.
That distinction protects us from both exaggeration and unnecessary rejection.
🔥 8. DOES CELEBRATING MARY'S BIRTH TAKE AWAY FROM JESUS?
No.
In fact, it points us toward Him.
Mary herself teaches us where her honor should lead:
“My soul magnifies the Lord.”
— Luke 1:46
Mary does not say, “My soul magnifies me.”
She magnifies the Lord.
Catholic devotion to Mary is therefore Christ-centered.
The Church honors Mary because of what God has done in her and because of her unique relationship with Christ.
As Pope Pius XII explained, honoring Mary ultimately redounds to the glory of her divine Son.
💙 9. MARY'S NATIVITY AND OUR OWN LIFE
Mary's birthday also teaches us something about God's providence.
Before Mary ever said:
“Let it be to me according to your word,”
God had already been preparing her for her vocation.
Before she stood at the foot of the Cross,
before she visited Elizabeth,
before she gave birth to Jesus,
God was already at work.
And perhaps that is something we sometimes forget.
🌱 God may be working in our lives long before we understand what He is preparing us for.
Mary's life reminds us that our existence is not an accident.
God calls.
God prepares.
God gives grace.
And He invites us to respond with faith.
🌸 A CATHOLIC ANSWER IN ONE SENTENCE 🌹
If someone asks:
“How do Catholics know Mary was born on September 8?”
A careful Catholic answer would be:
“The Bible does not give the date of Mary's birth; September 8 is the date preserved by the Church's ancient liturgical tradition for celebrating her Nativity. The date is traditionally connected with Mary's Immaculate Conception celebrated on December 8, but historically the September 8 Nativity feast predates the Western December 8 feast of the Immaculate Conception.”
That is a much stronger apologetic answer than simply saying, “Mary was conceived on December 8, therefore she was born on September 8.”
🌹 REFLECTION
September 8 is not simply Mary's birthday. 🌹
It is a reminder that God prepares the way for Christ. 🕊️
🌹 Mary's birth points toward Jesus.
🌹 Her life points toward Jesus.
🌹 Her words point toward Jesus.
🌹 Her obedience points toward Jesus.
🌹 Her Magnificat points toward Jesus. 🕊️
And even her final command in the Gospel of John points us toward Him:
“Do whatever he tells you.”
— John 2:5
That is the heart of authentic Marian devotion.
🌹 We honor Mary, but we worship God.
✝️ We love Mary, but we follow Christ.
🙏 We ask Mary's intercession, but we place our trust in God.
💙 We celebrate her because God chose her for a unique role in the mystery of our salvation.
As we approach September 8, let us rejoice with the whole Church:
🌹 Happy Birthday, Blessed Mother! 🌹
May Mary's “yes” teach us to say our own yes to God—with humility, faith, and love. 💕
