1 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐞 | 𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪?
One minute. A million bottles are bought around the world. As quickly as they are purchased, many are thrown away, adding to the growing mountain of plastic waste. What seems like a simple bottle of water, can become part of a much bigger environmental problem.
Over the course of one year, more than half a billion plastic bottles are bought. The number alone makes a growing concern: Where does the plastic eventually end up?
According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), most plastics are made from fossil fuels, such as oil and natural gas. This makes plastic production closely connected to the use of non-renewable resources and contributes to its environmental impact.
For instance, PET (polyethylene terephthalate), is a lightweight and durable type of plastic which can be recycled. However, not every bottle is actually recycled after use. Many end up in landfills, are burned, or enter the environment as litter.
Plastic also don't disappear in just one moment. Instead, it can gradually break down into smaller pieces called microplastics, which can spread through water and soil. These tiny particles have been found in many parts of the environment, making plastic pollution a concern far beyond what we see on the surface.
The problem is not only the number of bottles produced, but also the resources needed to make and transport them. Producing plastic bottles requires fossil-fuel-based materials and energy, adding to the environmental impact of something often used for only a short time.
Remember: A single bottle may seem insignificant. But when millions are used every minute, small individual choices can add up to a global environmental challenge.
