STATEMENT OF CONDEMNATION
Against Discriminatory and Derogatory Social Media Posts Targeting Indigenous Peoples
The Tribal Communities Association of the Philippines (TRICAP) unequivocally condemns the recent social media posts circulating on Facebook and other digital platforms that contain discriminatory, derogatory, insulting, and demeaning remarks against Indigenous Cultural Communities/Indigenous Peoples (ICCs/IPs).
These hateful statements and offensive stereotypes are not expressions of opinionโthey are acts that undermine the dignity, identity, and human rights of Indigenous Peoples.
They perpetuate centuries of prejudice, exclusion, and marginalization that Indigenous communities have struggled to overcome.
Such acts are inconsistent with the 1987 Philippine Constitution, particularly Article II, Section 22, which recognizes and promotes the rights of Indigenous Cultural Communities; Republic Act No. 8371 (The Indigenous Peoples' Rights Act of 1997), which guarantees the recognition, protection, and promotion of Indigenous Peoples' rights; and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), which affirms the right of Indigenous Peoples to live free from discrimination, prejudice, and forced assimilation.
We remind our fellow Filipinos that the First Peoples of this archipelago are not outsiders to our historyโthey are the original stewards of our lands, cultures, languages, and traditions. Our national identity is deeply rooted in Indigenous heritage. To demean Indigenous Peoples is to diminish an integral part of who we are as a nation.
TRICAP calls on all Filipinos, social media users, content creators, educational institutions, media organizations, and digital platforms to reject hate speech, challenge harmful stereotypes, and foster a culture of respect, inclusion, and responsible digital citizenship.
We likewise respectfully call upon President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and the Congress of the Philippines to prioritize the passage of a comprehensive National Anti-Discrimination Law.
The continued absence of such legislation has allowed many forms of discrimination to persist with insufficient legal remedies. The time has come to strengthen protections for all Filipinos, including Indigenous Peoples, and to ensure that discriminationโwhether committed offline or onlineโis met with accountability.
For far too long, the First Peoples and First Nations of our country have endured injustice, prejudice, and exclusion.
We cannot allow these attitudes to continue into another generation.
Respect for Indigenous Peoples is not merely a moral obligationโit is a constitutional duty, a human rights imperative, and a measure of our nation's commitment to equality and justice.
TRICAP stands in solidarity with all Indigenous Peoples and will continue to defend their dignity, identity, cultures, and rights.
RESPECT INDIGENOUS PEOPLES.
UPHOLD HUMAN RIGHTS.
HONOR OUR SHARED FILIPINO HERITAGE.
BUILD AN INCLUSIVE PHILIPPINES FOR ALL.

TRICAP:
