Progress should never come at the cost of our environment.
As discussions around Pax Silica position the Philippines as a future location for data centers, we must also ask: What will this mean for our environment?
Data centers need large amounts of water for cooling, electricity to operate, and land for construction. While Pax Silica could bring benefits such as more jobs, economic growth, and advances in technology, we must ask ourselves: Are these benefits worth the possible harm to our environment?
If these projects are not planned and managed responsibly, they could increase carbon emissions, reduce local water supplies, and threaten our forests, wildlife, and nearby communities. Farmers who depend on reliable water sources for irrigation for their crops, families living near proposed sites, indigenous communities protecting their ancestral lands could all be directly affected.
Economic growth is important, but so is the environment that supports our lives and shapes our identity. We must call for transparency, clean energy, responsible water use, and strong environmental protection before these large-scale projects move forward.
"Economic progress should never come at the irreversible cost of our natural heritage."
