"Do a Good Turn Daily." For many, these are simply words recited in scouting. But for four scouts of Basilan National High School (BNHS)โRamzi Khaled Fernandez, Miel Dewee Handang, Gabriel Hans Muksin, and Precious Alnette Porticosโthese words became a life-changing act that proved kindness can arrive at the exact moment someone needs it most.
It was an ordinary evening when a man was on his way home from the market with the only kilogram of rice he could afford to buy for his family. Unbeknownst to him, the plastic bag had torn, and the rice was slowly spilling onto the road with every step he took. Having spent all the money he had, buying another kilogram was simply impossible.
Fortunately, Ramzi Khaled Fernandez, Miel Dewee Handang, Gabriel Hans Muksin, and Precious Alnette Porticos happened to pass by.
Rather than ignoring the situation, the four scouts immediately called the man's attention and informed him that his rice was leaking. Seeing his distress and learning that he had no money left to buy another bag, they did something extraordinary. Without hesitation, they pooled their own money and handed it to the man so he could purchase another kilogram of rice.
For the scouts, it was a simple act of compassion. For the man, it meant everything.
Later that evening, the man searched for the school and sent a heartfelt message expressing his gratitude. He shared that because of the kindness shown by the four scouts, his family had food to eat that night. He admitted that he initially refused to accept the money out of pride but eventually accepted it because he knew his family would otherwise go hungry.
He also praised the students for living the values of Scouting and thanked their teachers and trainers for raising young people with compassionate hearts.
"They deserve recognition and appreciation. Because of them, we had something to eat tonight. May God continue to guide them wherever they go."
In a world where acts of kindness often go unnoticed, this story reminds us that true heroism is not always found in grand gestures. Sometimes, it is found in a handful of young people who choose to care, who refuse to walk away, and who quietly help a stranger without expecting anything in return.
The Boy Scouts of the Philippines have long upheld the principle of helping other people at all times. On that evening, Ramzi Khaled Fernandez, Miel Dewee Handang, Gabriel Hans Muksin, and Precious Alnette Porticos did more than fulfill a Scout's dutyโthey restored hope to a family in need.
Competitions may bring medals, and achievements may earn applause, but the greatest victory of Scouting is measured not by trophies, but by lives touched.
That night, a torn bag of rice became a powerful reminder that even the smallest Good Turn can leave a lasting impactโand that the true spirit of scouting is alive in the hearts of Ramzi Khaled Fernandez, Miel Dewee Handang, Gabriel Hans Muksin, and Precious Alnette Porticos, exemplary Scouts of Basilan National High School.
