The Supreme Student Learner Government (SSLG) of Basilan National High School acknowledges the concerns raised by members of our community regarding the school's policy on plastics inside the campus.
We recognize that every learner has the right to express opinions, ask questions, and provide feedback regarding school policies. Open communication is essential in a democratic and student-centered institution. However, we also believe that every right carries a corresponding responsibility. Constructive criticism helps improve our school, but personal attacks, insulting language, and disrespectful remarks do not contribute to meaningful discussions and instead create division within our school community.
The restriction on certain plastic items inside the campus is a school-wide policy that supports the Department of Education's environmental initiatives and the provisions of Republic Act No. 9003, also known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. This law encourages waste reduction at the source, proper waste segregation, recycling, and environmental awareness among all Filipinos. Schools play a vital role in teaching these practices by serving as models of environmental responsibility.
The implementation of this policy is intended to reduce unnecessary plastic waste, maintain the cleanliness of classrooms and school grounds, prevent clogged drainage systems that may contribute to flooding during heavy rains, minimize pollution, and encourage students to adopt sustainable habits that they can practice not only in school but also in their homes and communities.
This policy was implemented by the school administration under the leadership of our School Principal, Sir Arnel Balang Hajan, with the welfare, safety, health, and long-term benefit of the entire Basilan National High School community in mind. Like all school regulations, it was established to promote order, discipline, and the common good—not to inconvenience or single out any individual.
As the elected representatives of the student body, the Supreme Student Learner Government remains committed to promoting responsible leadership, respectful communication, and cooperation between students and the school administration. Our role is to serve as a bridge between learners and school officials by listening to student concerns, encouraging dialogue, and helping find constructive solutions whenever concerns arise.
We respectfully remind every Navigator that social media is a powerful platform. The words we post online can influence how others view our school, our fellow students, our teachers, and ourselves. Freedom of expression should always be exercised with responsibility, courtesy, and respect. Disagreements should never lead to insults, harassment, or personal attacks, as these do not reflect the values of a responsible learner and citizen.
If students have questions, suggestions, or concerns regarding any school policy, we strongly encourage everyone to use the proper channels of communication through their class advisers, subject teachers, the Supreme Student Learner Government, or the school administration. These channels exist to ensure that every concern is heard, discussed fairly, and addressed in a respectful and productive manner.
As we move forward, let us remember that true leadership is reflected not only in our words but also in our actions. By showing respect, practicing discipline, and working together as one community, we strengthen the values that define our school and proudly uphold the spirit of Basilan National High School Navigators 2.1: Leading with Direction, Serving with a Happy HEART.
