The National Officers of Samahang Tagapagtaguyod ng Katutubong Sayaw ng Pilipinas, Inc. recently held their First Board Meeting and Strategic Planning on August 23 and 24!

We’re truly excited about the great things ahead for our organization.

Here’s a quick update on what we discussed:
🎉 Encouraging more member involvement through fun and creative activities that celebrate our rich culture, diverse heritage, and talents.
📝 Preparing thoroughly for the upcoming National Folk Dance Workshop — aiming to make it both educational, innovative and inspiring for everyone!
💃 Developing clear guidelines to formally welcome and integrate newly researched indigenous dances, which we look forward to featuring in future performances and publications.
📱 Enhancing our social media presence to help more people discover and appreciate the beauty of our traditional dances.
🤝 Exploring new partnerships that will enable us to grow and create greater opportunities for cultural exchange.

Meaning : Invokes the Virgin Mary’s Blessing

Dance culture : Lowland “Christian”

Place Origin : Tibiao, Antique

Ethnos Linguistic Group : Antiqueńo

Classification : Religious

Performers : Young girls

Dance Researcher : Joanna Roan C. Villora & George L. Ulit

Background
The predominance of Catholic religion in Tibiao, Antique defines their faith and belief to the goodness and mercy of
the Blessed Virgin Mary dedicating the month of May foe a celebration.
The people’s devotion to the Blessed icon have traditionally recorded an account of singing and dancing through a
dance called “Kari”.

Kari is a hiligaynon term for “come’’ and a kiniray-a equivalent of “dali”. The term “kari/dali” suggest meaning of an action on doing something that form part to the development of the dance as entitled. The selected young girls age 5 to 15 years old also called the hosannas compose the group that performs the Kari in every house hold bringing the message of love, peace and prosperity. The tradition of performing the Kari has been passed on through generation as every family with daughters and young girls eagerly let them learn and perform the dance in summer time.

Background / Context:
Pantomina, known as a dance of love and courtship is considered one of the distinct
cultural practices in the Bicol region. It is the, as it was then known Before the coming of the
Spanish colonizers, this is known as dance of the doves or sinalampati (salampati is Bicol term for dove).
