SONG MOO KWAN FOUNDER
Song Moo Kwan is "The Ever You
thful House Of Martial Arts Training." Originally named "Song Do Kwan" which was Korean for Shotokan. Rich in history and tradition, Song Moo Kwan is one of the nine original Kwans of Taekwondo in Korea. Supreme Grandmaster Ro, the founder of the Song Moo Kwan system, was born July 3rd 1919in Korea. Growing up the youngest of four children and frail in health, Grandmaster Ro heard from his neighbourhood regarding the 1,200 year old ancient arts of Subak and this stirred an interest in the martial arts. The defensive techniques that were taught at the local temples impressed upon the young GM Ro, this strong attraction led him to search out Gichin Funakoshi and he studied shotokan Karate durin his college years. Grandmaster Ro travelled to Japan in March of 1936 to attend college earning his black belt under Funakoshi in the Okinawan martial art. During his summer vacations he would return to his home in Kaesung City and he would teach his neighbours and friends the techniques he had learnt, then in Feb 1944, Supreme Grandmaster Ro finished hi studying and work and retuned home to Korea to live. When back home his friends and neighbours asked him to teach, based on these requests he opened the Kaesung Dojang in the kwan archery school on March 11th 1944. This was first Kwan(school of Taekwondo)opened contrary to popular belief, Grandmaster Ro had also served as Tae Kwon Do instructor at the Dan G**k University, Seoul Oriental acupuncture College and several institutions. While continuing to train others and based on what he had learnt he developed additional hand and foot techniques of his own. It is this combination of training that has developed into what we know today as SONG MOO KWAN TAEKWONDO. Supreme Grandmaster Ro's dedication and contributions to the development of Taekwondo have continued throughout his life, on May 25th, 1953, Supreme Grandmaster Ro along with several other instructors, one delegate from each kwan met together at a conference. This conference concluded with the establishment of the Kong Soo Do Association. Grandmaster Ro served as the Executive Director of the Association they also placed Supreme Grandmaster Ro in the chairmanship rank promotion committee and Master Instructor for the Association. From 1966 to 1967, Supreme Grandmaster Ro served as the President of the Korean Taekwondo Association which recieved official sanctioning from the Korean government in 1963. GM Ro continues to be active in Taekwondo and is the advisor of the WTF. Taekwondo Song Moo Kwan still exists today, but only as a fraternal social friendship club. The official training curriculum endorsed by Taekwondo Song Moo Kwan is the Kukkiwon curriculum. The current President of Taekwondo Song Moo Kwan is KANG, Won Shik. Song Moo Kwan as all Kwan, support the World Taekwondo Federation. Taekwondo-Song Moo Kwan:- literally means: TAE - Jump/Kick or smash with the foot. DO - Art/Way or method. SONG - Pine Tree(everlasting). KWAN - Gymnasium or house of study. Grandmaster Ro chose "Song" after his birthplace "Song Do" city, Song Do was the capital of Koryu, where he first learnt about martial arts.
