Every life matters, and every journey deserves safety. Today, September 12, 2026, the Philippine Red Cross joins the global community in celebrating World First Aid Day, led by our Safety Services in coordination with Welfare Services.

This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œ๐˜๐˜๐˜™๐˜š๐˜› ๐˜ˆ๐˜๐˜‹ ๐˜๐˜• ๐˜”๐˜๐˜Ž๐˜™๐˜ˆ๐˜›๐˜๐˜–๐˜• ๐˜Š๐˜–๐˜•๐˜›๐˜Œ๐˜Ÿ๐˜›๐˜š,โ€ shines a vital light on ensuring accessible and inclusive first aid education for people on the move, displaced individuals, and our welcoming host communities. By promoting first aid as an essential life skill, we strengthen the capacity of individuals and communities everywhere to respond effectively to emergencies and provide immediate, life-saving assistance when it matters most.

Highlighting the spirit of this year's observance, Philippine Red Cross Chairman and CEO Richard J. Gordon reminds us, "First aid is more than a technical skill; it is an act of profound humanity that transcends borders and protects the most vulnerable among us." Echoing this commitment, Secretary General Dr. Gwendolyn Pang emphasizes, "By equipping people on the move and our local communities with life-saving knowledge, we build a resilient network of compassion and readiness where no one is left behind."

In solidarity with this mission, all Philippine Red Cross Chapters are mobilized to conduct impactful activities within their respective areas of responsibility. Because compassion knows no borders, and readiness saves lives.

Putting pen to paper for a cause, The Chain staffer Unah Angel Gabrielle R. Robante secured the silver award in the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Essay Writing Competition, with the awarding ceremony held on August 30, 2026, at SM City Iloilo Cyberzone, Mandurriao, Iloilo City.

The competition, organized by the Philippine Red Crossโ€“Iloilo Chapter and Red Cross Youth Iloilo Chapter as part of the International Humanitarian Law Youth Summit 2026, brought together young writers to showcase their understanding of humanitarian law through essay writing.
Robanteโ€™s entry earned recognition for its creativity, writing quality, and grasp of IHL, highlighting the power of student journalism and writing in raising awareness of humanitarian principles.

For Robante, the competition was her first IHL writing event under the Red Cross Youth. Despite having only one night to prepare, she managed to secure a spot among the top entries, exceeding her own expectations.

โ€œCompared to my past experiences, it was more technical and factual. I never expected to win, and Iโ€™m so grateful, even though I only had one night of preparation. All glory to God,โ€ Robante shared.

Her silver finish adds another milestone to her work as a The Chain staffer, reinforcing the role of student writers in engaging with issues that extend beyond the campus and into wider humanitarian concerns. | via Aya Yzabel A. Gonzaga

Throughout the final round, the HSCI debaters demonstrated compelling argumentation, sharp critical analysis, and a strong command of international legal standards as they faced the negative side, The Philippine Science High School โ€“ Western Visayas Campus.

Representing the Main Campus speakers were Joeann Nicole Baylon, John Ezekiel Sevilla, and Maeomi Chua. Supporting the speakers were researchers Bianca Chua, Rafela Gaudrelle Dillera, and Eunice Monte, with Queendy Merfe Potente as the reserve. Guiding the delegation were team coaches Maโ€™am Heart L. Huasiong College of Iloilo recently underwent First Aid Training, providing red cross youth volunteers with an opportunity to learn essential first aid concepts from theoretical basic to practical hands-on application.

Through lectures, demonstrations, and skills practice, young individuals gained a better understanding of how to assess emergencies, provide immediate care, and respond confidently when someone needs help.

Because First Aid is not only about knowing what to do-it is about having the knowledge, skills, and confidence to act when it matters most.

Young Red Cross volunteers from Hua Siong College of Iloilo gathered at the Ty Eng Liong Gymnasium, Hua Siong College of Iloilo (HSCI) Ledesco Campus, on August 22, 2026, for the Emergency First Aid Training (EFAT) designed to equip participants with life-saving skills and emergency response readiness.

The intensive training provided student volunteers with hands-on instructions on basic life support, proper wound care, handling cuts, performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and managing various medical emergencies.

Reflecting on the practical experience, one of the student trainees shared how the activity boosted their confidence in handling real-life crisis situations.

"First aid is an essential skill for the youth because you can apply it to yourself and others, making a difference everywhere," said Jean Philippe Tamayo, a Philippine Red Cross volunteer, highlighting the importance of readiness and community care.

The event was marked by active engagement and determination as the young volunteers practiced critical response techniques, reinforcing the core principles of humanity, voluntary service, and preparedness.

Through this training, the HSCI Senior Red Cross Youth continues to empower students with practical life-saving skills, fostering a proactive community of young first responders dedicated to serving others. | via Mhaiz Lorilla & Railey Santiago

From eight voices, only four remain.

After a series of compelling arguments, critical exchanges, and thought-provoking discussions during the Elimination Round, the journey now advances to the Semi-Final Round of the 7th International Humanitarian Law Inter-School Debate Series.

The remaining teams have demonstrated not only excellence in debate, but also a deep understanding of humanitarian principles, proving that meaningful discourse remains a powerful tool in promoting humanity and dignity.

As the competition intensifies, the stakes grow higher, the arguments sharper, and the challenge greater. Soon, only two teams will earn their place in the Grand Finals.
