The Grand Loge Mixte de l'Océan Indien (GLMOI) is a sovereign and independent masonic body. In Freemasonry, a "Grand Lodge" typically serves as its own highest authority within its specific jurisdiction, meaning it is not "under" another grand lodge in a hierarchical sense.
Key Points of its Jurisdiction:
Independence: It operates as a self-governing "Obedience." While it may maintain treaties of "amity" (recognition) with other Grand Lodges (such as the Grand Orient de France or others within the CLIPSAS network), it remains administratively independent.
Geographic Scope: As the name suggests, its primary footprint is in the Indian Ocean region (Madagascar, Mauritius, Réunion). However, it has expanded its presence internationally, including specific lodges in the Philippines.
Presence in the Philippines: Interestingly, there is a dedicated branch (GLMOI Philippines) that oversees several lodges across the country, such as:
Lodge Mount Madja-as No. 103 in Iloilo.
Datu Mantawi Hiral Lodge 100 in Cebu.
Pugad Lawin Masonic Lodge 108 in Quezon City.
Character & Governance:
Unlike "Regular" Freemasonry (which follows the United Grand Lodge of England and is strictly male-only), the GLMOI is part of Liberal or Adogmatic Freemasonry. This means:
Mixed (Co-Masonic): It admits both men and women.
Theological Freedom: It often emphasizes absolute freedom of conscience, though some of its founding documents (like its 2017 association statutes) mention a monotheistic foundation while maintaining a focus on philosophical and scientific evolution.
In short, it is not a subordinate of any Grand Lodges in the Philippines or other body of Freemasonry, it has its own autonomous jurisdiction.
