Ethics and Submission Sprints Conclude 3-Day Research Seminar-Workshop

The three-day seminar-workshop jointly organized by the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) and the National Organization of Science Teachers and Educators, Inc. (NOSTE) successfully concluded today, July 17, 2026.

The final day focused entirely on the critical final hurdles of academic publishing: ethical compliance, editor communication, and navigating the journal submission portal.

The final day's programmatic highlights included:

*Ethics and Cover Letters: Dr. Van Helen S. Cuaderes opened the morning session with Lecture 7: The Ethics Checklist, guiding participants through the finalization of AI Disclosure Statements and Data Availability Statements (DAS). He then facilitated Workshop 3: The Cover Letter Strategy, where attendees learned how to draft high-impact letters tailored specifically to a journal Editor's vision.

*Peer Review Simulation: In the afternoon, Dr. Aris C. Larroder facilitated Workshop 4, a hands-on peer review simulation. Participants engaged in a "blind review" of each other's drafts using a standardized academic rubric to experience the evaluator's perspective firsthand.

*The Final Submission Sprint: Dr. Larroder also led the closing practical session, Workshop 5: Submission Sprints, which walked researchers through the technicalities of online submission portals, focusing on keywords, metadata insertion, and precise file formatting.

The intensive three-day event officially drew to a close with a formal closing program, leaving participants equipped with a comprehensive blueprint to transform their datasets into publication-ready manuscripts.

From Data Stories to the "10-Second Pitch" Highlights Day 2 of USeP-NOSTE Workshop

The three-day workshop on manuscript preparation continues on its second day today, July 16, 2026, at the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) Davao City.

Todayโ€™s lecture-workshop shifted its focus toward effective data presentation and narrative construction.

Day 2 of the program targeted the critical "Results and Discussion" components of academic writing.

The day's highlights included:
* Data Storytelling and Compliant Visuals: Dr. Garry C. Cachuela led the morning sessions, lecturing on strategic data selection over raw data "dumping" to emphasize significant findings. He subsequently facilitated a hands-on workshop focused on designing WCAG-compliant tables and figures to ensure research visuals are accessible to all readers.
* Answering the "So What?": In the afternoon, Dr. Aris C. Larroder returned to guide participants through the art of interpreting findings without overreaching, demonstrating how to seamlessly connect the discussion back to the "Gap Statement" established on Day 1.
* The 10-Second Pitch: Dr. Larroder concluded the afternoon by teaching participants how to optimize abstracts and titles for search engine discovery (SEO) and to capture the attention of busy journal editors.

The workshop concludes tomorrow, July 17, with final sessions dedicated to the manuscript submission and review process.

This session explores how the democratization of scientific instrumentation addresses common resource constraints in schools. With the availability of affordable, modular componentsโ€”such as sensors and microcontrollersโ€”through online marketplaces, teachers can now design and build functional, research-grade experimental setups at a fraction of the cost of traditional commercial equipment. This shift not only reduces dependence on expensive โ€œblack boxโ€ systems but also expands access to high-quality experimentation beyond well-funded institutions.
Drawing from experiences in physics courses and research projects, the session will showcase a range of instruments developed using off-the-shelf components, from simple motors and sensing devices to more advanced applications like molecular spectroscopy. It will also examine how these innovations support more flexible, collaborative, and data-rich learning environments.
In addition, the session will discuss the pedagogical benefits and practical challenges of developing and implementing such instruments, including considerations related to teaching, scalability, and administrative support. Participants will gain insights into how low-cost, customizable tools can be leveraged to enrich science instruction in diverse educational settings.

This session introduces participants to Jamovi, a user-friendly statistical software designed to simplify data analysis for research. Attendees will learn how to manage datasets, perform basic statistical tests, and interpret outputs effectively without requiring advanced programming skills. The workshop aims to empower researchers, educators, and students to confidently analyze and present their data.
