This session explores how the democratization of scientific instrumentation addresses common resource constraints in schools. With the availability of affordable, modular componentsโ€”such as sensors and microcontrollersโ€”through online marketplaces, teachers can now design and build functional, research-grade experimental setups at a fraction of the cost of traditional commercial equipment. This shift not only reduces dependence on expensive โ€œblack boxโ€ systems but also expands access to high-quality experimentation beyond well-funded institutions.
Drawing from experiences in physics courses and research projects, the session will showcase a range of instruments developed using off-the-shelf components, from simple motors and sensing devices to more advanced applications like molecular spectroscopy. It will also examine how these innovations support more flexible, collaborative, and data-rich learning environments.
In addition, the session will discuss the pedagogical benefits and practical challenges of developing and implementing such instruments, including considerations related to teaching, scalability, and administrative support. Participants will gain insights into how low-cost, customizable tools can be leveraged to enrich science instruction in diverse educational settings.

The session aims to create actionable, DEId I-STEAM plans, fostering sustainable futures and ecosystem protection through collaborative, community-rooted science.

The session also addresses critical aspects of the publication process, including navigating peer review, managing similarity checks, and addressing copyright considerations.

โ€œCatch, Concentrate, Luminesce! Photon Management Experiments for the Classroomโ€ is a 2-hour, hands-on STEAM workshop that engages participants in exploring how light can be captured, focused, and transformed into visible emission. Designed for classroom application, the session demonstrates how low-cost, accessible materials can be used to investigate core concepts in physics and chemistry.
In the first part, participants work with solar cells, magnifying lenses, and a multimeter to examine how changes in orientation and lensโ€“cell distance influence the voltage generated by silicon solar modules and simple concentrator cells. This activity introduces fundamental ideas on light intensity and energy conversion.
The second part features an interactive activity guided by the original character Ultravioleta ยฉ, where participants prepare fluorescent solutions from water-based highlighters. These samples are observed under a UV lamp and analyzed alongside UV-Vis absorbance spectra obtained through a microplate reader, allowing participants to connect visual observationsโ€”such as color and glowโ€”with underlying principles of absorption and fluorescence.
Throughout the session, participants engage in inquiry-based learning as they relate qualitative observations to scientific concepts, while gaining practical strategies for implementing meaningful, low-cost experiments in resource-limited classroom settings.
