WVSU Development Communicators' Society Named Visayas Finalist in Ten Outstanding UN SDG Awards 2026

After a thorough evaluation conducted by a distinguished panel of judges, the West Visayas State University (WVSU) Development Communicators' Society has been recognized as a Visayas Finalist in the Ten Outstanding UN SDG Awards (TOUSA) 2026: Recognizing the Changemakers of Tomorrow.

The recognition highlights the organization's significant contributions to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with Klima kag Pamatan-on: Isturya kang Iloilo as its entry.

Klima kag Pamatan-on: Isturya kang Iloilo (KKP) is an anthology that promotes co-creation and decolonized community engagement, emphasizing that effective climate action begins with listening to local stories and experiences. The project received support from the Green Rising Fund for its youth-led climate and disaster resilience initiative.

The Ten Outstanding UN SDG Awards aim to recognize individuals and organizations that exemplify leadership, innovation, and dedication in advancing the global goal for a more sustainable, inclusive, and equitable future.

Inside the COC building today, June 10, 2025, hopeful applicants to the BS Development Communication program at WVSU sit with a mix of nerves and determination, fully aware that each step of the rigorous screening process could define their future.

The series of written examinations and verbal interviews tested not only their intellectual capacity but also their ability to articulate advocacies, affirm their resolve, and demonstrate a steadfast commitment to becoming catalysts for transformative change in the field of development communication.

In the panel interview, administered by DevCom faculty members: Prof. Joesyl Marie De la Cruz-Aranas, Prof. Louis Placido Lachica, and Dean Rona Dhel Alingasa became their defining moment, where each candidate strove to prove their worthiness of a place in the program.

Indeed, for the dreams they carry forward, their pursuit of Development Communication is not for personal ambition alone, but for the communities they represent and aspire to upliftโ€”communities whose voices they seek to amplify, whose struggles they aim to illuminate, and whose hopes they endeavor to transform into collective progress.

Like a harvest finally gathered after seasons of patient cultivation, big congratulations to the Class of 2026 of Bachelor of Science in Development Communication!

Thirty-eight DevCom graduates now stand at the edge of a new landscape as Academic Year 2025-2026 has drawn its final curtain.

This graduation feels like fruit grown from years of steady tending: lectures endured like changing weather, deadlines like passing storms, and breakthroughs like sunlight finally breaking through clouds.

As you leave the gates of West Visayas State University (WVSU), may you carry not just what was taught, but what was planted within you: the ability to listen deeply, speak responsibly, and translate silence into stories that matter.

And as this chapter returns to soil, know that what you have sown here will continue to take root far beyond campus grounds.

WVSU DCS represents the Visayas for an Exposure Visit

Metro Manila, Philippines, and Bicol, Philippinesโ€”May 25-30, 2026. The WVSU Development Communicatorsโ€™ Society Vice Chair for External Affairs represented the Visayas as part of the A-SASSY Exposure Visit held across Metro Manila and the Bicol Region.

The week-long exposure visit in the Philippines brought together members of the ASEAN Green Generation Alliance from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Cambodia. Among the delegates of the Exposure Visit was WVSU DevComSocโ€™s newly appointed Vice Chair for External Affairs, Dana Jamela T. Loot, who represented the Visayas alongside delegates from Luzon and Mindanao as part of Team Philippines. Throughout the program, delegates visited different key institutions, including the House of Representatives in Metro Manila, Ateneo de Naga University, and various sites in Daet, Camarines Norte.

Organized under the A-SASSY Project, the exposure visit aimed to strengthen partnerships among youth leaders, civil society organizations, and government institutions to address climate change, environmental protection, and disaster risk reduction across the ASEAN region.

Beyond learning about climate action, the exposure visit became an avenue for cross-cultural exchanges among delegates from different ASEAN countries, who shared perspectives, ongoing environmental challenges, and best practices that other delegates could adapt to their own communities. The experience became a shared commitment among the delegates to creating positive change through collective climate action initiatives.

The organization also received a plaque for being part of the programโ€™s Y4SDGs. This delegation and participation show how building meaningful linkages can strengthen regional solidarity toward climate action. As development communicators, we should be able to translate global and regional realities into grounded, community-centered initiatives.
