Every climb requires a solid grip, strategic movement, and most importantly, a community on the ground ready to spot you. โจ
This Pride Month, Youth Voices Count, in partnership with Team Dugong Bughaw (TDB) and the Iloilo Pride Team (IPT), took the celebration to the walls of Vertex Bouldering Gym in Iloilo City, merging the physical thrill of rock climbing with the essential work of q***r education and public health. Joy, play, and active health are forms of radical resistance, and when society tries to weigh us down with discrimination and stigma, we actively build the strength to climb higher.
Navigating a bouldering wall mirrors our lived realities. Sometimes the route is difficult to read. Sometimes we lose our grip and fall. But when you are surrounded by a community that catches you, you dust off the chalk and try again.
To ground us in our health rights, TDB delivered an empowering HIV 101 session, completely dismantling outdated myths regarding HIV and AIDS and replaced them with life-saving, evidence-based facts about its prevention and treatment mechanisms. Furthermore, TDB facilitated free HIV testing on-site. To fiercely protect the dignity and privacy of every participant, these testing services were completely undocumented, strictly adhering to the confidentiality mandates of RA 11166.
Following this, YVC Executive Director Toni Lopez led a comprehensive discussion on SOGIESC, breaking down the beautiful spectrums of identity, and reinforcing the truth that taking up space in sports, in healthcare, and in our communities is a fundamental human right, emphasizing that understanding our diverse s*xual orientations, gender identities, expressions, and s*x characteristics is how we dismantle the rigid frameworks built to limit us.
We do not just survive. We thrive, we climb, and we pull each other up to the top as we are claim our space in every arena. โ๐ฝ
