Today, we celebrate the feast of the second Filipino saint, St. Pedro Calungsod.
Hailing from Visayas, Pedro Calungsod was only 14 when he joined Spanish Jesuit missionaries bound for the Mariana Islands to catechize the native Chamorros. Serving alongside Fr. Diego San Vitores, he helped bring many to the Christian faith, learning new languages and enduring great hardship. When false rumors spread that baptismal water was poisonous, hostility grew. Despite the danger, Calungsod and Fr. San Vitores continued their mission and baptized a chiefโs child, enraging the father, who attacked them. Though he could have fled, Calungsod stayed to defend the priest and was martyred at just 17 years old.
On October 21, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI canonized Calungsod in Saint Peter's Square. The miracle attributed to St. Pedro Calungsod involved a 49-year-old woman from Leyte who fell into a coma due to lack of oxygen to her brain and was expected to die. Her doctor, deeply concerned for her life, prayed for Calungsodโs intercession, asking for a miracle. Remarkably, four hours later, the woman regained consciousness and made a complete recovery without any brain damage or paralysisโan outcome deemed medically inexplicable. The Vatican recognized this healing as a miracle, paving the way for Calungsodโs canonization.
St. Pedro Calungsodโs life reminds us that holiness is not measured by age but by faith and courage. At only 17, he gave his life for God, choosing loyalty over safety. His steadfast devotion, even in the face of death, challenges us to live our faith boldly and selflessly. As a young Filipino saint, he shows that true greatness lies in humble service and unwavering love for Christ. May his example inspire us to stand firm in faith and bring Godโs light wherever we go.
St. Pedro Calungsod, pray for us!
