“Some mountains are climbed. Others are discovered.”
For four unforgettable days, our team ventured into one of the least explored mountain landscapes of Iloilo, crossing the rugged highlands of Maasin toward Janiuay. This expedition led us to the majestic Mt. Puting Bato (1,150 MASL) and Mt. Payung-Payungan (1,300 MASL), together with several hidden waterfalls that remain untouched by mass tourism.
Before anything else, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to the LGU of Maasin, the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the 12th Infantry Battalion, Philippine Army (12IB PA) for granting us the opportunity and support to explore these remarkable mountains.
This was never an ordinary trek.
Every day tested our endurance. Thick mud swallowed our boots, steep ridges demanded every ounce of strength, and many sections had little to no established trail. These mountains have been visited by only a few mountaineers, making every step into the wilderness feel like a true expedition. Nature remains untouched here—raw, wild, and beautifully alive.
The forest is rich with thriving vegetation, but it also commands respect. Future explorers should be cautious of Bolan-bolan, a plant locally known by some as “poison ivy,” which can cause painful skin irritation. In these mountains, preparation and respect for nature are just as important as determination.
One of the most unforgettable parts of our journey was meeting the upland communities who call these mountains home. Some villages still live without electricity, relying on kinki (kerosene lamps) and sulo (torches) to light their evenings. Watching the mountains fade into darkness before tiny flames illuminated the homes was like stepping back in time—a powerful reminder that simple living, resilience, and community continue to thrive in places untouched by modern development.
These mountains are also shared with the Province of Antique, adding another layer to the rich natural heritage of this remarkable landscape. More than reaching the summit, this expedition was about understanding the land, respecting its people, and appreciating the stories hidden within every trail.
And this is only the beginning.
Our mission is to help establish a new trekking route that will responsibly connect the municipalities of Alimodian – Maasin – Janiuay – Lambunao – Calinog. More than creating another hiking destination, this initiative aims to promote sustainable eco-tourism, responsible mountaineering, environmental conservation, and opportunities for the local communities who have protected these mountains for generations.
The greatest adventures are not always found on famous trails. Sometimes, they begin where the path disappears.
This expedition reminded us that exploration is not about conquering mountains—it is about discovering places, honoring communities, and inspiring others to protect what makes them extraordinary.
