In a world where technology continues to advance at a rapid pace, electronic devices have become almost impossible to live without. From smartphones replaced after a few years to old laptops, chargers, televisions, and appliances left forgotten in drawers, technology has made life more convenient, but it has also created a growing problem often left out of sight: electronic waste, or e-waste.

According to the United Nations, e-waste refers to discarded products with a battery or plug. While these devices may no longer serve their purpose once thrown away, their story does not simply end in the trash. Many contain toxic and hazardous substances, including mercury and other heavy metals, which can pose serious risks to human health and the environment.

And in the Philippines, the problem is growing.
According to The Philippine Star (2024), the Philippines is among the top producers of e-waste in Southeast Asia. The country generated around 537 million kilograms of e-waste in 2022, equivalent to 4.7 kilograms per person which is an increase from the 3.9 kilograms generated per capita in 2019.

Behind these numbers are millions of discarded phones, computers, appliances, batteries, and other devices, many of which may end up in landfills, informal recycling sites, or other places where they are not properly handled. While we may easily move on to the next device, the waste we leave behind does not simply disappear.

E-waste is not like ordinary garbage.

According to the Geneva Environment Network (2026), electronic devices contain valuable materials such as copper and gold, but they can also contain harmful substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and other toxic chemicals. When improperly dismantled, burned, or discarded, these materials can expose the people handling them to dangerous substances.

This is especially alarming for informal e-waste workers and dismantlers. In a report by Inquirer (2025), Filipino e-waste dismantlers were found to face potential exposure to hazardous substances while recovering valuable materials from discarded electronic devices, often as a means of earning a living.

The health effects of e-waste exposure can be serious. Alabi et al. (2021) found that exposure to toxic substances associated with e-waste may affect the nervous system, respiratory system, kidneys, and other parts of the body. Children are particularly vulnerable because their bodies are still developing.
The risks also do not only affect those directly handling e-waste. Improper disposal can release toxic substances into the air, soil, and water, potentially exposing surrounding communities and allowing pollutants to enter food systems.

In other words, what begins as an old phone thrown away in one place can eventually become a problem for people who may have never even owned that device.

The effects of e-waste do not stop with human health.
When electronic waste is dumped in landfills or improperly disposed of, toxic substances can leak into the soil and contaminate groundwater. Hazardous chemicals may also find their way into rivers and other bodies of water, affecting aquatic ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.

Improper recycling practices can make the situation even worse. Alabi et al. (2021) explained that informal recycling and improper processing of e-waste can expose both workers and nearby communities to hazardous substances. Burning electronic components to recover valuable materials can release harmful pollutants into the air, while toxic residues may continue to contaminate the surrounding environment.

The consequences of heavy metal contamination can also be seen closer to home. According to Inquirer (2019), tests conducted on silt taken from Manila Bay showed the presence of heavy metals. While this does not directly establish e-waste as the source, it highlights the environmental risks when toxic substances are allowed to enter and accumulate in the environment.

Once these substances enter ecosystems, they do not simply disappear. This is the hidden side of technological progress.

Every new phone, laptop, or electronic device may represent innovation and convenience. But when it reaches the end of its life, the question becomes: Where does it go next?

Because if the answer is simply โ€œaway,โ€ then we may be ignoring the fact that there is no such thing as โ€œawayโ€ when it comes to toxic waste.

The Philippines has policies intended to address hazardous waste and promote proper waste management. Republic Act No. 6969 (1990), or the Toxic Substances and Hazardous and Nuclear Wastes Control Act of 1990, provides a legal framework for regulating hazardous substances and wastes that may pose risks to human health and the environment.

However, policies alone cannot solve the problem. Peralta and Fontanos (2018) identified challenges in e-waste management in the Philippines, including gaps in collection systems, public awareness, and the proper handling of discarded electronic devices.

For many Filipinos, old electronics remain stored at home, thrown away with regular waste, or sold to informal junk shops without knowing where the materials eventually end up. A broken phone or old charger may seem insignificant, but multiplied by millions of households, these devices become a growing environmental and public health concern.

As The Philippine Star (2024) reported, the Philippines generated around 537 million kilograms of e-waste in 2022. The problem, therefore, is not only about how much e-waste we produce. It is also about what we knowโ€”and what we choose to do with it.

Technology will continue to advance, and older devices will eventually become obsolete. Stopping technological progress is neither realistic nor necessary. However, progress should not come at the expense of human health and the environment.

As consumers, we need to become more responsible for what happens to our devices after we are done using them. Repairing electronics, extending their life, donating functional gadgets, and bringing unusable devices to proper collection or recycling facilities may seem like small actions, but they can help reduce the growing mountain of e-waste.

More importantly, awareness must go beyond simply knowing that e-waste exists. We need to understand what is inside our discarded devices, where they end up, and who may be affected by the way we dispose of them.

Because the cost of technology does not end when we pay for a new device.

Sometimes, the greater cost begins when we throw the old one away.

And as we continue to chase the next upgrade, the question remains: Are we also willing to take responsibility for what we leave behind?
